THE TWTex XR400 Thread.

Update: Still giving me fits. I ordered a new rectifier/regulator today. After completely rewiring everything from the handlebar switch plug back, I don't know what else it could be. With the way it's set up, I can run the engine and not have any connections to the lighting coils hooked up. They are independent from the ignition system on the stator. I did ohms checks for the stator on each phase and they check out ok. I also "checked" the R/R but there's no true way to tell whether it's completely shot by just the resistance readings... which were a little different, which is suspect. What I do know is that with the way I have my lighting connected, I can independently unplug either the battery from the system, the stator from the system or both. With the fully charged battery(13.64vdc) connected and the stator disconnected, everything works exactly how it's supposed to. If I crank up the bike and connect the stator, it drops to 9.4 volts. With the stator disconnected from the lighting system, I can start the bike and measure the output of each phase of the stator. At idle, I have about 11.5VDC on each side. If I set the throttle at a given rpm, both phases have within .1 or .2 volts of each other. If I rev it up, it puts out plenty of power. I never revved the bike real high but somewhere around half throttle each side was putting out > 75vdc. After speaking in depth with the guys at Baja Designs (they've been probably as good about customer service as one could be without the bike actually in their hands btw) one of the techs mentioned that under no circumstances, should the bike be run in a single output (200W) without the headlight being on to absorb some of the juice or the R/R might be pushed past it's limit.... which is in the neighborhood of 160W. It's possible that I did just that in the beginning since at first I had it wired to use all the settings on my handlebar switch (Ign. Off>Ign. On>Low Beam>High Beam) and sometimes didn't bother to use the headlight. Who'd uh thunk? I hate things coming down to the wire and having to "crunch", but I'm going to Big Bend regardless. I would rather not be "riding dirty" with no lights though. I was even wanting to buy a set of pannier racks from Monkey Wrench ^^ but without knowing how many more parts I'm going to end up buying, that idea got "prioritized". Sorry Frank... I'll keep checking, and if you still got it when I get some 'rat killing' done, I'll get with you.

OK that makes no sense. Electrical components "pull" power from the source the source doesn't don't push power to the component.

This is why you can hook a 100 watt lightbulb (1.2A) to a 20A (or a 400A) circuit without it burning out.

New CDI and we have a starter ladies & gents! Rode the back way from FTW to Dallas (lovely scenic drive, if used car dealers are your thing) and the bike ran great.

Fingers crossed we've got all the issues ironed out.

So after I finished washing vehicles today in the beautiful sun, I glanced over at the XR and decided to get a head start on the new R/R install by removing the old one. The new one should be here Friday. I pulled the tank and fuel line and reached for the the wires going to the R/R. After pulling the first wires (the jumpers that allow running both lighting coils together), I stopped and thought, "I wonder if one would be enough to run everything?". I figured it couldn't hurt to try, right? The worst that could happen would be a dim or flickering (LED) headlight from not enough wattage output. I kicked it over.... perfection. Everything worked just as it should. The headlight would have a tiny flicker when activating the brake light at idle but anything above idle and it was a solid shade of an arc welder. That's when the wife came out and told me I had 4 minutes to leave since I had to attend a "pageant practice" as an escort for my two daughters in a beauty pageant. Geessh.... can't ever get "man stuff" done around here. :headbang: Tomorrow, I'm going to hook it up to the other lighting coil and make sure that one will operate it too, although I don't see why it wouldn't since it had the same output readings. Although stranger things have happened in 'electroland'. It's got to be that R/R.

I was told it was a leaky valve on the head. It would smoke on start up but then run fine. I am not to worried about that right now it just getting her running. I could probably load it up next week like thurs or fri and you can take a look if you still want.

Scroll down. This has been listed on their site since you posted that. "Sorry, this product is currently OUT OF STOCK" No telling how long it will be out of stock.

Any similar one will work. Just has to have the correct specs. Probly 1000 different ones on ebay right now. My Tucker Rocky book shows a Trail Tech one for $59.

Finally broke down and went to using a battery. Really want to have compressor and gps charging available for K Trail next weekend. It ain't clean, but it is mechanically and electrically sound except for having to use blades on battery and rectifier.

A while back someone here, (on a different thread) posted a picture of my wiring schematic, but actually done on the compter.... I can't remember what thread it was, but I'd like to have that.

Yeah, I mean someone took my schematic, and made this beautiful work of art with it. Or.... basically made a version of it like what you're talking about.

Heck, I can't find either right now. I think there's one on my old cell phone that didn't transfer over or something.

So I had some time, meandering through posts this morning, and saw you were looking for schematics. So, having some time on my hands, waiting for SWMBO to give me my first Sunday order, I started over again at the beginning of this whole thread. I enjoyed the build the first time, too (well, most of it). As I went along, I came across a few posts that might be what you were after...If none of them are, well, I re-read portions of a good thread.

Found this one first:

Followed by this one (a bit updated):

This link, led to a decent article, with a few pictures in it (doubt it's really relevant to what you're after):

Here's a decent couple you posted:

I think this might be your hand-drawn one:

Heading to Big Bend this weekend on my XR that Aaron helped me dual sport a year or two ago. So far I haven't really put it through the paces except for a few Bastrop Trail rides.

I decided to make a rear rack for the bike and figured I'd post a pic.

This is a first version. My better half lovingly calls it stitches and tetanus. She may have a point.

I'll borrow a friend's drill press and go around the edges with holes so I have something to strap stuff to.

In the next version, I'll probably go around the edges with a piece of .5" steel so it won't be so sharp.

Hey man!!! Good to see you back on here! I've used that fuel jug to the point I wonder how I'd gone this long without one. Fixing to use it again this week, hopefully if I get my jeepster ready to fire up. We'll see.

You could zip tie some rubber hose around the edge after you drill the holes or glue it some how.

Easy solution----

Go to auto zone and get that chrome door lip moulding all the vatos put on their cars.

how about using a cutting board bolted on top of your rack...they're dirt cheap and can be found in every grocery store...
