Oops, I just realized that I'm going to Mexico in July, so as much as I would like to go on this one, I'll have to pass. But the July trip to Chihuahua and then over to Baja California will suffice.
These are often asked questions and I guess need a good response. I budget $50 a day for expenses while in Mexico to ride, eat, drink, party, see sights, buy gas, buy a few nicknacks, pay tolls, etc... If you go hog wild, or like your high end liquor or fine dining, $75 will do.

For this 5 day trip I would plan on:

Lodging, based on double occupancy: Clarion: $35 USD Magdelena: $15 x 3 = $45 USD Total $80 USD

Permits: TVIP $50 Visa (7 days free) $0

Gas: 500 miles / 10 MPLiter (37 MPG) = 50 liters @ 18 pesos / liter = $900 Pesos = $45 USD

Food: US: Welcome dinner: $20 USD In Mexico: Breakfast $5 Lunch $5 Dinner + Drinks $10 = $20 / day * 4 = $80 USD

Grand total: Trip $25, Lodging $80, Bike $95, Food: $100 = $300 ($60 a day)

I recommend bringing / having available $500 USD so you can do whatever you want, buy whatever you like, drink whatever you please, eat till you can't eat no more, see everything there is to see, ride as far as you want, get a private room when your roommate snores, buy a new tire, pay for a tow, and get out of a speeding ticket. $250 in cash will cover a normal trip. $250 you can get from an ATM if the need arises.

NEW FOR 2018: We will use the Whatsapp application to keep in touch as a group both before, during, and after the trip. Whatsapp requires only a wifi connection for group messaging, pictures, and video so it is perfect in Mexico. We used this on our 2017 trip and with probably 500+ group messages it is a great way to stay in touch with the riders on the group. As you register (even if you aren't paying yet) I will add you to the whatsapp group "Mextrek Amigos".

Re: 2018 Mextrek #7, June 14th - 17th 2018

Looking for someone who wants/needs a ride to Mission. I am leaving from Austin on 06-13 and returning on 06-17. Going to trailer my bike and I have room for 1-2 more bikes/riders. Just looking for someone to pay for gas. Let me know. Frank (512)789-677nine

Hey there,

New to the site and would like to sign up for this trip. I've got a '14 DL1000A that's screaming to get on the dirt.
I'm not new to trail riding and last year I did a 4K mile trip to the west coast, so I do have riding experience.
Hope you guys don't mind some questions I may have. Do you guys meet to ride around Austin? I'd like to meet some of you guys before the trip if possible.
My bike has Shinko 705's on now. How hard are the trails? Is this good enough? From some of the pictures, it looks to be ok, but I wanted to check.

Hope to see you all soon.

I expect those tires will limit your choice of ride routes; I’d be MUCH happier with tires that are 50-50 road/dirt vs. the 80-20 705s. You should order a copy of the MexTrek guide here: http://www.texasadventure.net/cool-stuff/ride-guides/ - as that will give you good insight about route options & conditions. I’m not in Austin otherwise I’d be happy to meet up.

Hi Guys

I am getting in on this one too; I would be interested in catching a ride with someone where our paths meet. I am in Hemphill TX; if anyone is interested LMK?

Hi Fabio, you should have come to the Monthly Meet and Greet last night. We could have answered all your questions over beer and wings.

Austin Monthly Meet and Greet

You can still come out Saturday to the TARA Monthly Dual Sport Ride tomorrow.

I might change them to some 60/40 tires and try to sell the Shinkos. The front tire has almost no wear and the rears are at about 40% now (about 6000 miles in them)

I just ordered the guide.

Gina and I are going to meet the group in Llano and just ride the northern part of the loop. Richard should be at the gas station at hwy 12 and Hamilton pool road.

I was curious about that. I'm assuming Gina is your wife? Does she ride with you? I'm asking because my wife would like to go in one of these rides with me but I'm not sure how it is yet to say if it's ok or not.

Gina is my girlfriend. She is SpiritAtBay on the forum. She rides a KTM690. She does not ride passenger. Does your wife ride? Some of the roads around Galeana are challenging enough that having a passenger on the bike might make it difficult to keep up with the group. There are many easier routes too.

I see. She does but she doesn't have s bike at the moment. I'm not planning to bring her to Galeana. It's my first time so I was to see how it is first before I expose her to this. I was more curious about the local rides.

The most challenging prt of the local rides would be the sandy spots and some of the water crossings. The routes are pretty mild other than than that. I don't see why you could not bring her along.

Everett is riding 2 up this Mextrek with his girl on his DR650. Slow pace, nothing difficult, would love to have another couple to ride with.

I will talk with my wife. Thanks

I have another question about my motorcycle's registration. Does the name on it have to have even the middle name? The DMV only added my initial in it.

Re: 2018 Mextrek #7, June 14th - 17th 2018

Question about vehicle permits:

Does anyone on here have experience with later (2nd) entry- with a previously NOT cancelled/returned permit?

I was the unlucky b*****tard who was en-route to the oct 2017 MexTrek and broke down 1/2 way to Mission.

I was therefore never able to even ENTER- and when I called to ask about how to cancel the permit/regain my deposit; was told that I could only do so at the exit of the Mexican border!
Furthermore; I was told that even if I couldn’t return the permit by Nov 1 (original exit deadline); I MUST do so within 180 days or never be issued another!

..of course, I took exception to the fact that I hadn’t even ENTERED Mexico (ever!); and that I should be able to even truck the bike to the consulate in Houston and prove it.
Getting no love there; I took the advice of a colleague and contacted visa and disputed the payment! —Visa actually agreed; and are still fighting this with the respective 2 governments!

..fast forward to April; and I REALLY want to join the June and/or Oct Mextreks!

.. and thus my dilemma:

I have until the end of this month on my 180 days.
I am considering trying to ride to the border to return the permit this month- but am afraid they may impound the bike and/or detain me! (..given aforementioned stubborn idea to ‘fight the power!’ )

Has anyone been in a SOMEWHAT similar situation?

Has anyone had any experience in letting a permit lapse beyond 180 days and tried to return? (My 2nd option being to just wait until actual day of trip to try to cancel old/get new at the same time)

Thanks in advance! (And trolling not required! :P - I am kicking myself enough already! )

Re: 2018 Mextrek #7, June 14th - 17th 2018

We had a guy who cancelled a forgotten truck permit from 2004 in 2016....he was lucky enough to still be driving the same dodge. 10 minutes later he had a bike permit.

The system is very straightforward. As cautioned beforehand, not making it to the border is the risk of an early permit purchase (I say this only so the other mexico newbies understand). But it is antiquated enough that after your passport expires and you get a new one the new number bypasses the old system flags and people are skirting prior obligations with a new passport and new bike.

Mexican systems are dated. They may know you disputed the charge, they may not. A smile and wink at the border works wonders, but you may be asked for cash payment to cover the old permit. The defense of ignorance of the rules is often accepted and in my opinion there is very little chance you'll be be detained or hassled. But there is always that tiny little risk so have a friend with some cash on standby.

If you want I can visit the banjercito locally and inquire more...Bajercito is the gov't banking arm charged with actong as cashier and escrow officer on TVIP transactions.
