Exclamation Big Bend Via Del Rio...Is it Safe?

Anyone ride through/ around Del Rio as of late? Is it Safe? Are we better going further north? My Husband and I are going Two-Up Camping in Big Bend For my Birthday and he is concerned that there will be trouble that close to the border. Any info would be appreciated!

Should be no problemo. If you want to camp along the way stay at Seminole Canyon State Park.

Re: Big Bend Via Del Rio...Is it Safe?

The only danger for me is the strong temptation to make a left turn stopover at Del Rio and not follow my original route.
...if you're down in Acuna and you ain't up to being alone....

The roads are very little traffic if you take that route. I didn't get cell signal (but I have an old 2g phone). If you break down, you might have to hitch hike or something. Or walk. Also, I always carry extra drinking water and food just in case. I would bring umbrella and wide brim hat for shade. It's desert, there's no shade. Maybe carry a SPOT or something too.

Watch your fuel. There isn't a gas station every couple of miles.

used to be only one gas station between Del Rio and Sanderson (120 mile stretch). I say used to be as it's now closed and that did me in two months ago. I ran out of gas 10 miles from Sanderson. Luckily the bike died at the top of a hill and I had enough cell signal to call AMA roadside assistance and they came to my rescue an hour later.

Amazing...1 hour to get to you in middle of nowhere. While AAA takes 3 hours to get to my car in Houston.

Yes but I got gouged for the gasoline. AMA paid for the service call but they charged me $25 for 5 gallons of gas. The Stripes in Sanderson was $1.89 a gallon when I passed by. Normally I would have complained but that night I was so happy for them to arrive as it was already dark and I needed to arrive in Marathon before 10pm otherwise I would have been sleeping under a tree without a tent or bag and temp was in the high 30's.

Safety wise is no problem. I've done that road at least 3 times. Just has up in del rio and then in Sanderson if I'm not mistaken. There's plenty of border patrol vehicles along that route as well

Re: Big Bend Via Del Rio...Is it Safe?

I believe your question has already been answered but my wife rode to Big Bend two up from houston. We had no issues. We stayed in Bandera the first night, rode through Del Rio and ate BBQ at Rudy's and then went onto Seminol Canyon State park to camp before making it into big bend. No issues other than some unplanned road work on 90. Great trip, long trip. Gonna be doing it again this spring. I hope y'all have a safe and wonderful ride!!
