The place for stories, videos, etc from the Adventure Rider Breakfast Series - 2 day ride, 5/19-20/18 departing Backyard Bistro ride to Goldthwaite. Link to the before - http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117217

Good ride today. No mishaps, the SSO was fun and a good short cut.

More to come.

The next 2-day overnight-er post Adventure Rider Breakfast Series will probably be in September. Regular 3rd Saturday breakfasts will take place in June, July and August.

Day 1. The Backyard Bistro in Pipe Creek to the Relax Inn in Goldthwaite.

Since I've done 2-day overnights rides to Brackettville, Comstock, Sanderson, Rocksprings, Sonora, Ozona, Menard, Brady, Mason, Llano and San Saba I was looking for new town (area) to visit, then I thought about the "Jays", aren't they from Goldthwaite? Let's check that out!

We got to ride some old favorites on the way up and some great new to me stuff, thanks to Matt for pointing out I was routing close to the Colorado river crossing, and getting me the info on the crossing. That was the super secret option.

And man do people get up early! 2 Houston area riders were already at breakfast on Saturday when I got there at 820 or so, one rode over, his KSU was at 4AM. Harold would have already been at breakfast be he was waiting for me, that would have made it three.

The groups divided up well organically. Small groups with similar thoughts on adventure riding.

The weather was much better than the forecast, appropriately windy to keep the heat and dust down. Sunday? that was interesting, coming soon...

Super Dan (dannyboy) with his P40 FIGHTER was the first to cross that Colorado. This was not your regular submerged "slick slab", rather Rocky greasy stinking mud that you didn't want to drop in with various size hidden rocks. (I scouted out a few bowling ball sized) Sander was playing it coy, building up the tension about crossing (he knew we could do it). I went second, with my, "I'm either brave, or stupid" face on.

Richard g tipped me earlier that even piggy bikes could do it:thumb:

Great pics. Thanks so much for organizing and leading Sander.

On the return, the skies opened up with a temp drop to the mid 60s and off and on soaking rain showers beginning at the bridge site. Sanders nav unit charger tip "broke off" (ran sweep) and my phone wouldnt charge and i could not allow it to get wet from all the rain. I finally broke out the rain gear and Etienne on the mighty gs1200 set a nice brisk pace with track nav all the way back to pipe creek. He and I had quite the adventures on those clay slick roads when our heavy bikes somehow get a mind of their own and try their best to pitch you, we never went down. We broke Sanders golden rule and revolted with a sit down lunch at https://www.coopersbbqmason.com/ bbq (I ate the **** out of that chicken, tangy sauce style good ) and enjoyed the lovely Brazilian scenery running the cash register.

I'd say it was hard riding in anyone's book for 500 miles and 2 days

Sander, true true on the early business. Woke up at 4:45 at the hotel and could not go back to sleep waiting for the alarm. I think i was anticipating beating the rain going south which still got wet.

Day 2

The weather forecast for Sunday deteriorated overnight but this was an adventure ride after all. I woke up to a slightly damp bike and dark skies.

We met for breakfast at 730a for a 8a blast off. As we headed for the Regency Bridge I noticed my GPS was bouncing around quite a bit. This was the first ride with the new mount, as we neared the bridge for a quick stop I steady the GPS with my left hand, after a few minutes of that the mount gave way, fortunately with my hand on it on no flying off, so I put the GPS in my jacket pocket.

At the bridge, it started raining and Efdmarc took over the navigating. It rained a little then stopped then rained a little more. Near Hilda the rain stopped for the rest of the ride.

Efdmarc did great job leading and I rode sweep, that was the best seat in the house for watching the bike wrestling on the decomposed granite roads. They were deceptively slick.

After a quick lunch at Cooper's in Mason, due to the efficient service from the Brazilian cashier, we were back on the road.

As it stated to sprinkle we asked our leader about his schedule, he was riding back to Houston that night, Efdmarc said he said he had the rest of day and most of the night, so we stayed on route.

The guys in the group are unbelievable, we all slid all over the roads but keep moving. Watching their bike handling skills was fantastic, when I could spare a moment of concentration from fighting to keep myself upright. Of course I didn't get video of the really bad sections. The only good thing was all the sliding did warmed me up, I was cold and wet otherwise until Doss.

Past Doss the ride was mostly uneventful, we did keep our eyes on the dark clouds to the west. Around Rio Medina the lightning started, and a light sprinkle for the last few miles to Castroville. Just after Harold got loaded up in his truck and pulled out on the road to head to Houston, the bottom fell out, great timing.

What a ride / what a group!

I continue to be impressed by the riders I'm fortunate to ride with, Harold, Brian, Dan, Efdmarc - well done! You made it look much easier that it was.

Looks like you guys had a great time. We peeled off in Llano for burgers, then headed back to Austin. How did I miss Richard? Was he at breakfast?

A last-minute decision Saturday mid-morning had me leaving Austin intent on meeting up with you guys in Goldthwaite. However, just outside of Castell a friend called me with a small emergency so I abandoned the ride to go help. I stopped for gas in Llano on my way back to Austin and ran into Sander and his group.
