ROT Rally 2009

Everybody has their own style. Some styles were just a little different. This gal's style included Elton John sunglasses and a glittery halo. Hey, I don't judge, I just snap photos.

This group of gals decided that their bachelorette party should include a visit to 6th street.

These hats are in style again, except now it's okay for the women to wear them too.

I wasn't the only paparazzi on site. This fellow looked like he came straight out of a 1920s movie.

Being a paparazzi is hard work and builds up a powerful thirst. Stuntman and I sought some relief at BD Rileys Irish pub. No cover and live music were to my liking. Mike Milligan and the Alter Boyz were rocking the house. I liked their sound so much I stayed for several beers.

Unfortunately, some people had too much fun. Like this fellow. He drank too much and couldn't walk, stand or even sit on a chair. I think the world was just spinning too fast for him and the floor was the safest place for him. The bouncers had to physically carried him to the front door.
563532547_dwKAQ-L.jpg

Once they caught their breath, the bouncers then carried him out to the sidewalk.
563533351_iEGeM-L.jpg

While waiting on the cops and paramedics, he lounged on the sidewalk.

Finally help arrived and hauled him away on a stretcher.

And that, as they say, is that. Stuntman and I called it a night and headed for home, with a short detour for some chow. Mmmmm, pancakes. Thanks for tagging along.

Haha. These girls were sitting next to us at Trudy's on 30th Street about 8pm. Small world. Still wouldn't want to paint it, tho.....

Ah yes, the life of Medic 6. The first one is "too drunk to go to jail". I never knew there was such a thing until I started working here. That crew is hilarious. She claims to be 5'2", but I seriously doubt it, even in boots. Her partner seen at the head of the cot, is 6'7". :lol2: The second is a well know urban outdoorsman.

Thanks for the photo show...that's as close as I'd like to actually be to the event!

I went to the event a few times years ago but I like your pictures much better. You have a gift as a photo journalist. Thanks.

What a wonderful compliment, Janet. Thank you very much.

Excellent photos Richard. As some have said, much better than being there! One problem though. Since it's a proven fact that there is a finite amount of manly attitude to go around, every time you post a picture of Stuntman Jeff the rest of us get just a tiny bit more metrosexual. :lol2:

Usually late, sometimes a dollar short

Richard-
What a great set of pictures! Your style of shooting along with the witty observational comment is priceless. I'm not sure I've got the guts to just take pictures of strangers yet.

What body/lens are you shooting? Was that all handheld shots?

Thank you for the compliments. I've been working diligently on my photography skills the past few months and really appreciate the kind words. Milton Otto has been my photography role model (I really like his photos and his style) so my initial photography goal has been to improve to the point that my photos are as good as his.

I shoot a Canon XSI, all hand held. I like it a lot but I'm lusting over the new Canon 5d Mark II. :hail:

On Friday for the parade I used my Tamron 18-270, f3.5-6.3, vibration reduction lens. There was still a little daylight remaining when the parade started so there was just enough light to grab the shots I did. But, once the sun went down, I was done.

On Saturday I used my Canon 50mm f2.8 lens, which I wish was vibration reduction. I used my on-camera flash a few times, but mostly shot natural light. Luckily there were lots of lights on 6th street. I gravitated to the better lit areas and just took shots of opportunity as they walked by.

For the majority of the individual pictures, especially those taken Sat on 6th street, I asked permission prior to taking the pic. I didn't have a single person turn me down and most seemed pleased to have a "papparazi" ask to photograph them (my dslr seem to make people assume I was a "real" photographer - I was asked more than once what publication I was taking pictures for). My experience is that most people will gladly let you take a pic if you ask pleasantly, especially if you tell them why you want to take their picture (wow, I love your bike/hat/shirt/vest/hair/unique look/etc, may I take your picture?).

He does some really nice work. I guess it sort of helps to have the colors of Mexico as a backdrop too.

Rich, I used to (still do?) lust after a 5d also. Take a look at TricePilot's mentor's advice, Forget Resolution He's shooting Nikon but what he sez about keeping it simple and light makes sense to me. After all, its just pressing the leet-tle shutter button. "F/8 and be there," is what Loren McIntyre said. Yeah, right.

Milton,

I believe good photography has more to do with the photographer than the equipment, so in that respect I agree with much of what Ken Rockwell says.

But, I'm a guy, so I naturally like and gravitate toward acquiring gear/equipment, especially the latest and greatest.

Hence the eternal conflict within my soul. :zen:

Here's a bit to stir your inner guy - all agree that the 5D is a fantastic camera. But now Canon has released the new 5d Mark II and it's all that and a bag of chips.
