Lost an old racing buddy

Howard Juckett from Beaumont lost a courageous battle against several illnesses after many years. We raced against each other for years in Dist. 20 and TORCS. A truly good and honorable guy. Rest in peace buddy.

Re: Lost an old racing buddy

I am very sorry to hear that Rob.You introduced me to Howard several years back at a TORCs race and shared with me all the obstacles that he had faced, yet there he was, lining up to race. To say he left an impression on me would be an understatement. RIP Howard.

Re: Lost an old racing buddy

"I am happy and scared to report that Howard received a perfect new heart yesterday. He is doing well but it's much more touch and go than I was prepared for. Because of his history of radiation treatment and subsequent damage, his aorta was basically a wreck. His own heart proved very difficult to remove... one of the surgeons told me, "my God, that thing was hard to pry out of there!" Because of this, he has also received part of the donor's aorta. He was taken to surgery at about 3:15 in the afternoon of 12-23 and I was able to see him and pat him at 1:15 AM on Christmas eve. He's woken up since then but is back under sedation... wish I was too! He is scheduled to go back to surgery this morning to completely close his chest."

This was a quote from his wife in 2008 and he still raced up to a year ago with a TRANSPLANTED heart.

Re: Lost an old racing buddy

In 2012 in a TORCS race at Pierce Ranch Howard and I raced to final turn, pretty unusual at this time of his career . Usually something would set him back or he'd fall, picking his bike up really whipped him. This course was terrible, doubt anyone liked it. There was some kind of rolling bumps in the ground from farming or something, just not fun, lol. Howard on his little Honda 250X and I bumped and grinded it out every lap. It went down to last corner as he charged under me and lost his front end, slid out. But it was a hoot! RIP

1st lap he was ahead by 1.3 seconds, lap 2 and 3 I was up by 1.5 seconds, after 55 minutes, then as I said he fell in last corner or it would have continued to flag. Our fastest was identical at 18 minutes, 45.7 seconds, amazing stuff that day.

Re: Lost an old racing buddy

Just a final note, as his kidney was failing this last time, the reason for being in the hospital was receiving a new kidney , FROM HIS WIFE! The kidney transplant was working I believe but his liver failed him best I can tell. His wife is doing ok from surgery but of course now this.

Re: Lost an old racing buddy

Thanks Rob. Howie and I raced our first event together in '81 and traveled to probably 100+ enduros/hare scrambles together from MS to Oregon since. I haven't raced/ridden much in recent years but kept abreast. He delighted in rubbing my inactivity in my face in his New Jersey style. Seeing what he went through for several years and especially recently has been tough. As a believer I know right now he is ripping those special trails we've all heard about, God Speed!

One more thing, in all those years and miles on the road I never got lunch out of him. Never, not once!

Re: Lost an old racing buddy

Sorry for your loss Rob. Sounds like a really special guy and tough competitor.

In the little racing I've done, I've found that as much as it's fun to win, you really learn to respect and appreciate the good competition and the good guys that compete hard and fair against you. Racing isn't as fun unless it's challenging. Glad you got to race against him. I'm guessing he appreciated you as much as you appreciated him.

Re: Lost an old racing buddy

Wish you could have made the service Rob. And C Boyd organized a get together that evening at a local restaurant for all the guys, gals etc to remember the good times with Howie. I know you would have enjoyed that also. We weren't able to stay for the whole thing but I'm sure it was fun.
