I was going through some of my bookmarks and thought I would put together a list of some of my links pertaining to dual sport riding. Feel free to share your favorite links.

Hey, Chris, you might want to check out dixiedualsport.com too. Most of the rides are a ways from here but I've enjoyed their newsletter quite a bit. Most of the rides look like they're worth making a trip for.

I was told that TON would have GPS files for the SHNF trails - but I can't find it. Anyone have a link?

Here is a list I've compiled over time. It leans toward the XR650L but there is good stuff here for everyone. FYI - Some links may be broken since I've built this over a 3 year period.

Info on replacing the second gear: NX gear is 16T and XRL is 17T

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=114834&page=636

http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/products/310347-honda-23421-mn9-010-hard-parts-gear-16t

I got a chance to ride about 150 miles of dirt on an NX 650 yesterday.

If/when I get another XRL the very first freaking mod will be to crack open the cases and throw in the NX 2nd gear cog!!!!! Why, oh why, did Honda change it? The NX was so well behaved comparatively. No lugging or clutch feathering in second (BTW, second on the NX could handle from no speed up to about 25 with no problem). No screaming in first (NX's first did zero to about 18 comfortably). No gap, no constantly shifting back and forth and back and forth. It was sweet!

On my XRL first would be screaming at about 15 and second didn't really kick in until about 25 so when everyone is clomping along at 18-20 the XRL was either lugging in 2nd or screaming in 1st - no fun either way.

So, if you've got your cases cracked anyway, grabbing the NX 2nd gear cog (Part Number 23421-MN9-010) and throwing it in is probably the best money you can spend.

*** Fifth gear replacement ***

The gear is not hard to find at all. But, it is a Honda-of-Europe part only. (Google David Silver Spares)
If I gave you the part number (23491-MW2-780) and you asked your local Honda parts guy he would tell you it is not available.

This gear was installed in 1996-1999 NX650 motorcycles and all FMX650 motorcycles. 5th Gear Part# 23491-MW2-780

Battery Info

Browsing the internet I discovered the recently introduced, lithium ferrous batteries sold by Shorai. The XR650L’s stock, Yuasa, YTX9-BS battery weighs 6.8 pounds. To reduce weight and facilitate battery relocation, many XR650L owners substitute the smaller, Yuasa, YTZ7S battery weighing 4.5 pounds. However, the even smaller, Shorai, LFX09A2 battery weighs a mere 1.2 pounds. Therefore, even without relocating the battery, an XR650L owner can reduce the bike’s weight 5.6 pounds by merely substituting the smaller, more powerful, Shorai battery.

Shorai states their LFX batteries “…contain no poisonous lead, no dangerous acid, and do not create explosive gasses during charge, as traditional Lead-Acid batteries do. Compared to lead-acid, Shorai LFX lithium are also extremely light, have much lower self-discharge rate, do not sulfate (i.e. do not degrade while sitting unattended), and are environmentally friendly [sic].”

http://www.shoraipower.com/t-faq.aspx

In addition, the Shorai, LFX battery equivalent to a Motocross/Yuasa, YTZ7S battery only costs $21 more.

http://www.batterystuff.com/search.php?q=ytz7s

Here are two photographs of the Shorai, LFX battery I “borrowed” from JBFla, a member of the TW200 forums.

http://tw200forum.com/index.php?/top...192#entry12192

Each photograph compares a Shorai, LFX09A2 battery to a Yuasa, YTX9-BS battery, the stock battery employed by the Honda XR650L.

Was looking for some un biased information to help out a prospective new rider. I am kind of biased to dirt. I stumbled upon this website. I have to admit that the Marine Corps came up with something here. It is a good website to point a friend to for some basic advice on bike choice, gear choice, and it has some good advice from proffesional riders.
