Anybody tried Plasti-Dip?

So here s my idea.

As you know I have a white 01 kz1000p. I've been recently introduced to Plasti-dip. I'm thinking of doing the fairing, fenders and tank in a matte black and putting a vinyl on the tank in a pattern that I'm waiting to reveal.... it'll be really cool.

Anybody ever used this stuff?

Not sure I would do the tank much because gas offers a bit of an instapeal situation but I was tempted to do that before I discovered that issue. I've done several sets of wheels though and they turned out great, if matte black was what you are looking after. I also have a friend where we did his BMW wheels in PD matte white. Turned out pretty good but not to my taste. I prefer the approach of washing a bike when you take stuff apart or off to fix it, and the rest of the time I just wait for rain.

Matte Black held up for 3 years and 220,000 miles on the grill of my Mini Cooper had some rock chips the last year but not bad enough to make me redo it.

I'm about to do the wheels on my Frontier in the next couple of weeks.

Did mine a few years ago. It's been rubbing/peeling off in various places, but I'm too lazy to redo it.

It doesn't seem to me that it would be durable enough to put vinyl down on top of it.

How do you clean it?

On my GS, the tank covers are dipped in white and I touched one side with a grimey hand.

I've tried most normal detergents ... it's smeared it, but the finish appears to be stained. Haven't tried brake cleaner yet ...

That's a lot of driving!!! :eek2:

Aside from the miles, my post would read exactly the same.

I know a guy who had his car professionally dipped in blue and it held up well for him.

You probably could Billybob but those panels take a beating on the bigger mules like the DR (and KLR), especially from mounting the bike, loading stuff on it, and shifting weight while riding. I figure if you put a few heavy coats on it and let it dry for a couple days before you throw them back on it'll stand the best chance of surviving.

Thanks rpcraft. It's worth a try since they are already beat up. A pair of new panels to beat up are around $140.

I've coated quite a bit with plasti-dip, but as the others say, it rubs and peels off with any abrasion. Took it all of and tried Rust-oleum Peel Coat (rugged coat) and it seems to be much more durable, nothing peeling yet. Goes on a little thicker.

Plasti-Dip as in the stuff intended for dipping tool handles? Why?

ok the "paint" is on

Its not the GREATEST job, but it works... Looks kinda "mad maxish"

From what I've seen, this plasti-dip stuff generally works better and lasts longer on cars for some reason. It tends not to fare terribly well on motorcycles. As a guy who's restored a couple of KZs over the years, I recommend doing it right. The KZ is so well loved that, even after dumping extra money into proper paint and other aesthetics, I've always made money on the resale:

I used Plasti-Dip on some of the interior trip pieces on my Jeep when I had it. It looked good, but my experience with it there put in my mind that I wouldn't ever put it on the exterior of a vehicle. Just incidental contact resulted in it peeling or wearing through in a couple of places. I was having to reapply it to certain pieces about yearly.

I Plasti-Dipped the auxillary lights on my Road Star just to cover up the rust and they look OK. Way cheaper than new lights and gives me a chance to see how durable the stuff is. Been on there for about 5000 miles and holding up so far. Clean with a damp cloth.

If you want it to last a little longer, make sure to put a coat of matte/gloss clear over your finished product.

I used it on the fork lowers and shrouds on this 1992 Gas Gas GT25 trials bike. I tried using it on the tank but between fumes and the occasional spill it was an epic fail.
