HONDA XR650L OWNER'S SIGN IN

The other week I did a 25 mile run down the interstate at about 75 miles per hour, the temp outside was in the low 80s and I noticed my oil temp was running about 275 degrees and it wasn't even summer yet. Thinking that my BRP could benefit from an oil cooler, was considering the Jagg slimline cooler maybe mounting it up under the headlight. Has anyone else put in an oil cooler and if so did you have any problems and were did you tie into the oil system at?
Here ya go bobbilly....

Oil Cooler... Keep in mind that there are several different options for oil coolers, I went the XR400 route and it's worked flawlessly. :thumb:

Header Wrap will cool it off even more but I wouldn't use it on aftermarket pipes.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Rman this is exactly the kind of information I was looking for, hopefully my line from the cooler to the frame won't be quite as tight of a bend since on the 2012 650 they moved this fitting a little further down the frame toward the back of the bike. Just out of curiosity, how did the header wrap hold up over time?

I'm listening...

The highway shakedown worked and I blew right past the the mileage where the reserve light goes off. Anyway, I've been talking to a couple of people about a route to Big Bend that is less pavement and more dirt. The natural tendency is to push south along 90, but most of the roads on the 100k topo are privately owned. I'm thinking that the secret is north of I10.

It's held up just fine, believe it or not it looks the same as the day I installed it. The key to header wrap is to not put it up wet. After the bike gets wet let it run long enough to let the wrap dry thoroughly so no water can remain between the wrap and the pipe which will cause them to rust out and the wrap to fail.

finally got my exhaust, headpipe and skid plate on... i'll report back after i run'er, since i'm waiting on the high temp silicone to dry.

i really, really, really wasn't expecting to get this much out of a pipe, but i have to tell ya, i'm super impressed. the bike has never run better (maybe i had it a little too lean prior), has more hit all over, especially low to mid. it sounds awesome. it even has shortened the gap between 1st and 2nd gear. no, really. and the thing wheelies easier now. so much so, that i got pulled over on my way to the saturday morning ride with the fellas. left a stop light, hit second, popped the clutch a bit, rode a wheelie, switched to third, came down and i see the red and blue lights in my mirror. i know, i know, stupid thing to do, but i couldn't help it! he was a bike guy and could smell the new exhaust burning still. he gave me a warning, and even wrote on the ticket "one wheel in the air" instead of "reckless driving." the exhaust is Vance & Hines XCR. headpipe is stock (welds ground) with some external purdiness. i'm so freaking happy with this bike. only thing i left that i really want to do is the suspension....:eat:

Once again thanks of the info, I am already in the process of scoring a oil cooler on ebay, the seller wanted $129.99 so I made him an offer, see if he likes it. I have a bit of experience with AN fittings (industrial mechanic for ten years) so that should be no big deal to figure out. I couldn't see how you attached the cooler to your bike, I notice the cooler has attachment tabs with rubber bushings so I thought I would make a couple of threaded wells and tack them to the frame and bolt it on. I'm hoping to catch up with y'all one of these days and do some riding, I'm still a bit of a novice so I might not be able to keep up but it still would be a blast.

Which oil cooler did you find? An XR400 oil cooler? If so I did a quick search and found a brand new one for $102 here....

http://www.hondapartsnation.com/pag...IL_COOLER/XR400R-98-JPN-A/2Y14KCYTKCY4F2700BA

As for mounting it to the frame I have to admit that I never have. It's wedged in there so tight it'll take an act of God for it to move around so I figured why bother. If you're talking about installing the 400 cooler above ^^^ then you'll see what I mean once you get it in there, it ain't goin' nowhere!:shame:

That's the very cooler I was looking to buy, looks like you have saved me a few more dollars. When I did my search all it seemed to come with was ebay and they were all used ones. I noticed that you have a KDX 220, back in the day (81) I had a KDX 420, that bike was a blast to ride, wish I still had it since they don't make them anymore, I only had it for about a year ( hard to find a place to keep it being in the Navy) then I used it as part of a trade in on my Jeep Scrambler, which I still have. Once again thanks for all of your help.

Good morning all.. I am currently looking at picking up a 95 XR650L that is need of a CDI per the current owner. I've been reading here and there that used ones can be found on EBAY but either I'm looking in the wrong place or there just aren't any there at this time. I'm wanting to get this thing in MY garage as soon as possible but am reluctant to buy a bike that isn't able to fire up on arrival. Any one got a spare one floating around in the bottom of their toolbox I can borrow just to make sure this thing will run before I do the deal?

Dave

Thanks for the help. I ordered the Vance and Hines today. I can't wait to see and feel the changes in the bike. I have everything on the way...Dave's Mods items, muffler, and de-smog kit. Yee Haw!

Good report, Scotty. When I did Dave's Mods, a pipe, smog removal, etc. my 2007 BRP made much more horsepower, torque, and general good drive. The bike started out as a Corolla and ended up as a Ferrari.

Ha! Yeah I'll always have a KDX in the stable. Best woods bike ever! Funny, my current KDX is the 1st bike I've ever owned that I didn't have to spend a dime on. Bought it completely modded and it's real, real fast!!:trust: :lol2: It even came with a Recluse Clutch! :brainsnap Now that took some getting used to.

I do have the washer. Thanks for the offer! I have to wait until to next week to get busy on the bike. I'm riding all weekend!

I don`t have a cdi, but if you are getting the bike cheap and you think you can trust the owner i would get the bike.

Yeah I really liked my KDX, the guy that I rode with at the time was a big time MXer and he helped me get use to the bike. Once I did we had a blast riding some of the ravines and canyons around San Diego. It was while doing some of the hill climbs that I developed my desire to get a thumper, after watching the other riders just creep up the steep hills instead of **** to the wall like the two strokers:eek2:.

Thank you TJ, but the one on the scoot is one toasted puppy after 18 years and deserves a decent burial. I will be ordering a brand spanking new one asap. I did indeed pull the trigger on the bike and unloaded it into my garage late last night. It's seen better days that's for sure but in time it's gonna turn some heads. I GOT PLANS. I've had a lot of great race horses over four decades of riding and racing and I've always wanted a BIG XR. Now I've finally got one and I'm looking forward to some great rides and adventures with you guys.
