Africa Twin thread

Dual sport . Don't buy the boat, the greatest day of your life will be when you buy and sell a boat.

Nothing with the bike. I've had nothing but good times on it. But riding solo just isn't for me. Being single and now kidless, I have more time on my hands than I know what to do with.

It's kind of funny and sad if you think about it. I bought the bike as a means to escape the grind of being a single parent and all the B S that came with dealing with school and teenage stuff. It was nice to be able to get out on the road and have some alone time.

But now that I am alone, I don't want to ride because it's boring. This isn't a pity party, it's nice to have this issue. It's just now I'm not sure what I want to do with the time I have, now that I have so much.

Maybe it would be different if there were other guys/girls that were looking for riding partners that wanted to go places on the weekends. But right now, 95% of my riding is to work and back. I could trade it in for a sport touring, or sell it and buy a boat (which more that likely I'd end up feeling the same after the first summer), or buy another little car to mod and beat up on.

I don't know. It may just be me going through empty nest syndrome. lol

EVERYBODY says that lol. You'd think no one would ever buy one. I'm not going to really. I can't afford the one I wont anyways.

Anyone have this happen?

Yesterday, at 8 minutes into a ride with the odometer at 1477 miles in S2/T3, my new 2016 Africa Twin DCT stalled.

I was coasting up to a stop sign on back country road and as soon as I touched the throttle, dead.

I noticed it kicked me into neutral right after it died. The reason I noticed was because it was an uphill stop and I started rolling backwards when I tried to take off. I've noticed when parking the bike in the garage, I can hit the kill switch prematurely with it still in S2 and when it turns off, its still in 1st gear. But in the case of this stall, it kicked it back to neutral without me telling it to.

I'm going to call Honda today and see what they say. There are enough reports on the Internet about this that they have to have heard about it by now.

Coincidentally enough, yesterday's ride was a test run for my new video setup on the bike, so here is a video of it happening:

Looks like I'm not the only one:

I have a 2016 dct and have not seen this problem yet. Could u describe ur camera setup tho?

I have a 2016 AT manual and noticed the first time I rode it that they are so lean at idle and just off idle, I found an installed something called a booster plug that completely changed the low speed throttle response, it will crawl along with no lean spots at all. The booster plug is a PIA to install and now somebody offers a new device that does the same thing but installs in a minute or two under the seat. I don't know the name of it, but somebody on this site installed it...

It's an old Garmin 1st Gen Virb camera I had laying around mounted to my left side crash bars with their handlebar mount. I have it sync'ed to my Garmin Edge 820 (which is really a bicycle computer) to automatically start recording when I hit 6 mph and stop recording when I stop.

Just got off the phone with Honda about my AT DCT stalling and they said that I was the first person that has ever called them about it.

They recommended taking it to the dealer and letting them try to replicate it, which I suspect is impossible to do.

Honda did say if more people called in, there might be more action on this from them. So if you've had the issue, let them know.

I think that is a standard response taught to anyone in the motorcycle industry. The Tenere' forum is full of comments along that line too, ev when the problem is well known and all over the web.

I didn't watch all of your videos, but if others have the same problem, Id make sure they saw them. I had to do that to Sig once too. It worked with them, but it was a smaller ticket item.

Just went tubeless, knock on wood no leaks. This makes me very nervous until I get some miles done. I leave for a big Colorado trip Thursday.

I followed best rest video.

I would tend to be concerned too, but the fact is that there are millions of rivits, highloks, nuts, bolts and other fasteners sealed in a very similar manner flying in the fuel tanks of thousands of airplanes everyday with very good results. It looks to me like you did a pretty good job.

Thanks, we shall see:(

I went with the Outex tubless system in my twin and it has worked flawlessly.

The key difference with this kit is that they have these fabric buttons that go over each nipple to allow you to be able to tighten the spokes without sticking to the tape sealer.

You can youtube the name and find a ton of videos, here is one just for the AT. The tape width is perfect.

Have run all over Texas and Colorodo with the setup and been through numerious tire changes without any problems.

excellent, Yes I looked at the outex system. But I like the sealed spoke then tape. I could see myself gouging the tape. I bought the tape for $25 from Amazon, it fits the wheel perfect. If I have to adjust a spoke, I will have to clean out the sealer, it is kind of rubbery so shouldnt be an issue. I can change the front tube in about about 15 minutes, the bead is super easy to break on the 21". The rear is not too bad, but it would take me about 45 minutes to repair the tube.

Anyone have any ABS issues with their Africa Twin?

My front ABS turned off on me during a ride today and had to completely turn the motorcycle off and back on to reset.

No, never and I did a bunch of off-road in Colorado with big downhills and it worked perfect.

Did your wheel leave the ground? If it spins in air it can take a little bit to recalibrate.

Maybe, I had been chasing MacDaddy down some caliche roads for the last two hours when it shut off.

I had no idea that the ABS could turn itself off in a crucial moment like that leaving me with no ability to stop the bike safely. I got pretty lucky to fall where I fell. Certainly made me lose confidence in the bike.

Do all ABS motorcycles turn the ABS system off without warning or is that just a Honda feature?

They do not turn themselves off. Sometimes it feels like it on a dirt road....

They do not turn themselves off.

I wish that was true, but the service manual says otherwise:

ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) (CRF1000A/D)
DTC INDEX
• The ABS indicator might blink in the following cases. Correct the faulty part.
– Incorrect tire pressure.
– Tires not recommended for the motorcycle were installed (incorrect tire size).
– Deformation of the wheel or tire.

• The ABS indicator might blink while riding under the following conditions.
This is temporary failure. Be sure to erase the DTC (page 20-6).
Then, test-ride the motorcycle above 10 km/h (6 mph) and check the DTC (page 20-6). Ask the rider for the riding conditions in detail when the motorcycle is brought in for inspection.

Ask the rider for the riding conditions in detail when the motorcycle is brought in for inspection.
The motorcycle has continuously run bumpy roads. <-- this might have been my issue
– The front wheel leaves the ground for a long time when riding (wheelie).
– Only either the front or rear wheel rotates.
– The ABS operates continuously.
– The ABS control unit has been disrupted by an extremely powerful radio wave (electromagnetic interference).

Found this in the manual as well:

I have had my front wheel off the ground hundreds of times and it has never caused any issues with the ABS, but honestly I don't know if the front ABS has ever really kicked in except on a wet road. With the dual disks up front I am always very careful and haven't really asked for the ABS to help out. I think one time while stopping on super steep downhill pile of rocks in Durango I felt the ABS kick in, but that is really the only time I ever felt anything.

Oh I have done lots of wheelies on the AT, but I can't say I have ever tried to apply the front brake after landing :)
