KLB's Photo Journal

In preparation for some upcoming Valentine mini-sessions my wife organized, I put together a studio setup in the front room of our house. The setup was simple: seamless white paper, 2 flashes, and 2 shoot-through umbrellas on light stands. This was the first time I was able to try out my Pockewizard X's, which I've had for quite some time now. I wasn't going for anything crazy, this was a simple lighting setup, hoping to not have any shadows. I enlisted my oldest to be my test subject for the lighting. As to not waste the shots, I had her put on her basketball uniform. I'll be honest, I have no confidence with flash, so this gave me a chance to work out some kinks so hopefully I wouldn't freak out too much when the pressure was on.

The first set of mini-sessions were held in the a.m. of 1/28. We were scheduled to have five 20 minute sessions with a buffer of 10 minutes between each session. Two of the groups cancelled on us due to sick kiddos. This is a problem when doing this for people you know. We didn't charge a deposit, so when this happens we lose out. Oh well. The first session was for my sister-in-law's kids. After the others were done, I got a couple of my own kids per my wife's instructions. We had a few props and tried to keep it simple, keeping the focus on the kids.

01/28/2017 - Part B
A few weeks prior to this day, my sister-in-law's boyfriend asked if I was available to take some pictures for him. Turns out, he would be proposing while they were in town and wanted me to capture it. She was to be in UH Alumni meetings all day and was supposed to get out at 6, at which time he was going to grab her and walk to where he planned to propose. So I got there at about 5:30, dressed incognito since she would recognize me right away. I met up with him and we went over the plan. My biggest concern was being seen as she's very observant! I didn't know what gear I would need, since heading there, I didn't even know the plan. Once we went over it, I chose the 70-200mm and positioned myself behind a pillar and a newspaper stand. Then the waiting began.

As I waited, I watched and panicked as several people would go to the spot and linger there. But eventually they would clear out. 6 pm came and went and I hadn't heard from him. Then he finally sent me a text at about 6:10 that they were on their way. It's right about this time a guy came riding by on his bicycle and stopped in the exact location. I was freaking out inside. He stopped because he was fiddling with his phone or iPod. He was there for a couple minutes then finally started to ride away, only to stop about 25 feet further, but still in my frame. He literally rode away right as they were coming around the corner.

A couple things to note: 1) I'm pretty sure I was more nervous than he was, probably the most nervous I've ever been taking pictures. I was terrified of messing it up. 2) As I had stood there waiting, I watch the light get sucked right out of the day. If they were there right at 6pm, it would have been fine, but even a bit before that there was perfect light. By the time I snapped my first picture at 6:18 pm, I was practically dealing with street lights for my lighting.   I had to push the D810 to to the max and utilize the VR on the 70-200.

I did miss focus on quite a few shots, especially at the beginning. And of course, it happened so fast and was over before I could think about what I needed to change or even check the back of the camera. I gave them color and B&W, but due to the lighting, the color were pretty bad in my opinion. I liked the B&W much better and just think of how much better they would have been 30 minutes earlier. :miffed: :headbang:

I've posted these in a separate thread, but I thought I would add them to my journal here. I noticed while walking out to the garage that the bromeliad had bloomed. I knocked the dust off my macro and gave it a whirl. It was mid-day on a bright sunny day, so that really gave lots of color and contrast to the photos. They're nothing special, but I did like the way some of them came out.

Notes: It's amazing at f/16 how shallow the depth of field can be on a macro when you're up close. For this one: Approximate Focus Distance - 0.33. That's from the EXIF, not sure if that's in feet or meters.

I began my in-my-yard birding kick. Today's subject was a Red-bellied Woodpecker. I got a few shots of it, mostly terrible, and this is the only one I kept. There's just something about it I liked.

As I was working from home, I saw this hawk land in my pecan tree. I grabbed my camera and headed outside. This was the only decent shot of it I got. I believe this is a Red-shouldered Hawk. Someone could correct me if I'm wrong. This one was much smaller in size than the Red-tailed Hawk I chased a few weeks earlier.

Proud dad moment to follow: My oldest daughter is in Kindergarden and her art teacher selected her painting to be entered into the HLSR School Art Program competition. It ended up winning a 1st Place Ribbon! When we finally received her art back, I wanted to get a picture of it to keep it in digital form.

Body: Nikon D810
Lens: Nikon 50mm f/1.8
Aperture: ƒ/5.6
Focal Length: 50 mm
Shutter Speed: 1/320 sec
ISO: 450
Notes: I chose f/5.6 because that is around the sharpest aperture for this lens. Depth of field didn't matter for this shot, it was just lying on my driveway. I was holding the camera out above it and in Live View. This would have been a perfect application for a moveable back screen, but the D810 doesn't have one. After several attempts to get it as lined up as I could, this is the best I could get it. Not perfect, but that's ok.

We did our best to get their attention, and I fired off lots of pictures. In the end, I took 2 pictures into Photoshop CC and combined them.

When we were almost home, coming back from my daughter's basketball game, a big bird flew over the car. I assume it was a hawk. I made some comment to my wife and she said, well, come back after you drop us off. I grabbed my gear and headed back out, assuming it would be long gone by now. But as I pulled up to the area, which is a quarter-mile from my house along a bayou literally right next to I-45, I saw it land on a high-wire. It was way up there, but it sure didn't look like a hawk. I snapped a shot of it and zoomed in. It was an osprey! :eek2: I couldn't believe it, right here in the middle of Houston along one of the busiest interstates and fishing in a nasty bayou. :lol2: I watched it for 30 minutes before it flew off and I haven't seen it since.

Notes: It took off from the high-wire before I was ready and circled around. I only managed one decent shot of it in flight before it landed.

But, it's still way too busy here, really not much better. I changed my settings up quite a bit, expecting it to take off.

Stay right where you're at. Knowledge is dangerous with photography. The more you know, the more you'll spend. It's a slippery slope.

Lol. I think I'll be okay, I spend more on food than just about anything else. Though a Gopro would be pretty nice to have.

Sometimes when the I see light hit something a certain way, it makes me pull out the camera. In this case, I was in the kitchen and the afternoon light was flooding in the room through a small window and lighting my little one.

After reviewing my osprey shots, I was really wishing I had more reach. 500mm may sound like quite a bit, but it's still not enough, at least not for me. I've had a 1.4x teleconverter for a while. It's the version 2, and there is a new and improved version 3 out now. But, I wanted to do some tests with it on, as well as testing the VR limits of the 200-500mm lens. So with the 1.4 TC on, I get a max of 700mm. Time to test it. And just to note, when throwing on the teleconverter, it increases the minimum aperture from f/5.6 to f/8.

Body: Nikon D810

Aperture: f/8.0
Focal Length: 700mm
Shutter Speed: 1/400th
ISO: 1100
Notes: This is the dog next door, Ice. At 700mm, hand-held, VR on at 1/400th of a second breaks all the rules. But, the VR on this camera is really good. When I zoom in on the eye, the sharpness is perfectly acceptable for me.

We were about to head out to meet some friends and had a few minutes to spare. I don't have any recent shot of my wife by herself. I drug her outside and made her pose. And here's my time to brag about her. Last year we both decided to change our eating habits. In a year she has lost an incredible 85 lbs! I'm down 80 lbs myself. Carbs are the devil!

I was hired by my third cousin to take senior portraits for her step-daughter. My cousin had recently married, so I had yet to meet her "new" children. When I asked what type of theme she wanted, she said she's loves nature. I recommended Houston Arboretum for the location because it would seem to fit what she would like. The entire session went great. She was a perfect subject. Unlike my girls, she did exactly what I asked of her. When you have a cooperative person, it really is pretty easy. I asked if they wanted anything specific and the answer was no. I was basically told to do what I do. :ponder:

The pictures above were some of the easiest I've ever taken. Completely opposite for the ones below. My niece is turning 2 and my sister-in-law asked me to do her "official" photos. Sure thing. Well, she chose to do it in a candy store. As you can imagine, she was like a kid in a candy store. Pretty sure she touched everything in there and I couldn't get her to look at me for anything. If she did look, it was just for a split second and that's as long as I had to get the shot. She had set up a 30 minute window prior to the store opening, so at least it was just us and one worker in there. I did my best with the shoot, but it was literally the hardest time I've ever had. I only used my 35mm sigma. There wasn't time to constantly change lenses. In post, I tried to make the photos bright and colorful to match the theme.

And now for some two-wheeled action. :rider:

Dad and I rode the Connies out to COTA for the MotoAmerica tire test. It is a true tire test, but they open it up to the public. When we first arrived, the 600s were out on the track and the 1000s were in the pits. We walked along the garages for a bit just observing. Last year I could walk around about half of the track. This year they had it much more restricted, so the only place I felt good about shooting was the bridge between turn 2 and 3. It's a great shot, and unlike MotoGP weekend, I had it all to myself. The downside is, all my action shots look pretty similar. If they do the same next year, I'm going to make more of an effort to look for options up around turn 1 and see if I can find some other spots.
