Re: New guy here

You guys are all too young for my group, we are all in our 60's-70's except for "dirtbomb" and that guy from Muenster, Texas. When you talk of owing more that one bike it is not uncommon, but remember, we all don't buy our bikes new, there are several very nice used ones out their, thus, giving us more cash for other bikes. I know you have been out of riding for several years so new seems the thing to do, but for me and most of my riding buddies, it's totally used in most cases. I wouldn't do anything at this time till you start riding with other riders and get back in the bike world, learn what going on. Dealers just want to sell bikes and that's ok if you are sure of what you want and willing to pay the price, but for me it can be money not well spent, just my thoughts. You said $24,000 for a new Goldwing, well the market will always have several for sale and I would say you could pickup a almost new one in the $12,000-$14,000 range and with low mileage, I wouldn't worry about the year model, they run forever. Most riders on this forum are either Duel Sport or Sport Touring riders so this type of riding tends to have different types of rides, calling for different bikes. Ride your Versys and enjoy it, it's too soon to make a change, you need time to figure out what you want.

Re: New guy here

Well at least I took some of your advise. The new to me bike is a 2004 ST 1300. The Versys is just a memory now. Also my insurance went down by a third so that made me happy.

I did look at some used wings too but ended up going with the smaller 1300.

Seems that half the fun is riding and the other half is shopping for the bike and stuff to put on it. I've been having a good time lately.

Hah! Whippersnapper!

Good choice on the ST. I think it has a bit more room for 2-up than the FJR from what I have heard others say. However, I like my Feejer just fine.

and I have 2 bikes...

Re: New guy here

Glad to see you went used, should save you money up front, plus leaves the opportunity for other bikes in the future. I always heard that the ST1300 were hot bikes to ride, that is the motor puts off a lot of heat, is this still true, or have they been upgraded to help prevent this? I've always liked the ST1300's and the FJR's, but still preferred the dual sport type of bike.

Re: New guy here

Sorry for that, I will correct it. I've spent all my time making millions and spelling was not at the top of my list. Ok Chuck, the guy with the bomb in his hands, is the ST1300 hot or not?

Re: New guy here

This ST1300 puts off heat that is for sure. They haven't changed anything on this bike since 2003. I've read about wings tips you can put on the bike to defect some of the heat but I haven't had a chance to do that yet.

Even with the heat I ride it everyday day here in Lubbock and it is completely manageable. The electric windscreen helps because you can lower it for more air when needed.

Also this bike is heavy which is not a problem when moving but maneuvering in the garage it is very noticeable.

I'm enjoying it.

Well, it's supposed to be a rocket (the clipart is "RocketScientist")

Dunno about the ST but my 07 FJR does put out the heat.
