My 1987 airhead (R80RT) is using a considerable amount of oil. Likely to be valve guides or rings. Compression is over 145 in each cylinder.

I am having difficulty finding a shop in the Houston area that will replace the valve guides (if that's what it needs). I can do the rings, if that is the problem. I can remove the heads and carry them to remote places, if need be.

Wild West Honda works on BMWs, but not if they are more than 15 years old. Most if not all dealers have similar limits.

Motorcycles Unlimited is limited - they don't work on old BMWs.

Any ideas from this crowd?

You would have to mail them but I have heard a time or two that Boxers by Bruce in Pantego,Texas up in Tarrant county works on the older ones. That is the only one that popped up so far.

I spoke with a fella here Zepplin Moto (832) 741-4737 and was told I had the wrong number. Sent a email to the address listed in the IBMW Riders' market place listing. Also sent an email to Sealy Cycles as they wouldn't answer their phone. Hope to hear back from one or both sometime tomorrow.

I was referred to Harold's Automotive Machine Shop in Richmond and spoke for about 5 minutes with a fella there. They have been doing head work on bikes since the mid 70s and a friend of mine who rides beemers highly recommends them.

I will likely buy rings and valve guides and put new rings on while Harold replaces the guides.

I have a 94 gspd that stopped running and I'd like to find a shop that specializes in airheads as well.

Have you talked to Gulf Coast? I believe they have one tech that's an airhead specialist.

I would not take it to Sealy cycles .

I haven't heard back from them, will most likely use Harold's. What's your problem with Sealy? Curious minds want to know.

you might try Perry's Motorcycle & side car in Ft. Worth, he used to be a dealer and works on older Beemers.

Phone Mike at MPH - they do service on airheads - or may be able to direct you where to send the heads

Took my Gspd to MPH a few weeks ago after I struck out many times getting it running. $70 later and the timing set correctly and it's running again.

Very satisfied with their device.

Mike Haven at MPH is the man. He bought his son an R80 to ride to college, as I recall, so he knows and loves the marque. Next closest option is Bruce (Boxers by Bruce) in Pantego.

No other recommendations in Ft. Worth area, BTW.
