50CC ride attempt

At the BP station ! 2:01am way to go texas t !!!

Heading West on 202 probably going to hotel. Bet he's hungry too, basically no good meal for 2 days.

GOOD NIGHT AND SLEEP TIGHT, YOU DESERVE IT

I flew Brenda into JAX Sunday afternoon so we're at the Hampton next to the airport.

I took time to pee before fueling, so the time stamp on the receipt is a few minutes behind. Total time was right at 47H 30M.

 So, what's next? :-)

Scott, I have to give some serious thought about this. I truly do not like night riding because I don't think I can see as well as I used to. And when it's raining at night, and even more so when it's night, raining, and I'm in deer country I have serious doubts about my sanity.

Dry pavement, non-critter territory, no traffic (so I can use all my candlepower) is okay at night, but it's hard to always have those conditions.

I've got the 3 SS1Ks planned for Dallas in October, and if my attitude doesn't change after that I might consider stopping this.

There is a new move afoot within the community to do Day Only rallies with the first one being held up in Alberta. I'll give some thought to doing stuff like that.

I don't ever see myself being in the league of the Big Dogs that ride the IBR. I know how tired I am after just doing two 1K days; I just can't imagine doing that 11 days in a row.

There's a lot of details to think about and those stinking time zones always play with my mind. I set a stop watch and use it for my official time. I write reminders on tape about various goals and stick them on my windshield.

But with all our planning S... happens. I did the RAT (Round All of Texas) in May. Right at 3300 miles, missed the insanity level by 2 hours. Didn't matter, I apparently didn't read the last line of instructions. It said, must use GPS tracking, I'm a *******, again. I kept records like I was doing 3 back to back to back Saddlesores. Didn't turn on the spot! Duh! So it didn't happen. Rules are rules.

Again, congratulations Brian. I really enjoyed it.

What an effort!
Brian, add my congratulations to the others, I'm impressed you made it through all that weather and still came in under the time. I'm not sure I could have done that.

I don't know why I didn't notice this. My wife called it out to me. This is the damage after I hit the truck tire tread on the highway just as I was entering Yuma. Grrrrr....

That must have been a pretty big hit!
I would be a bit upset about that, but... you made it through in one piece so it's not all bad.

Wow! I read when you said it took your highway peg, but that’s a crazzzy hit!

By the way, for any of you looking to get into LD riding or possibly even Rally riding, I wrote a small article for the Concours Owners Group about the Kactus Kilo ride. You can see it here: http://www.twtex.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1570552&postcount=210

The benefit of doing a ride like this or those put on the Motorcycle Tourer's Forum
( https://www.mctourer.com/ ) is that all you have to do is pay your fee, show up, ride the prescribed route (with proof), and you'll earn your SS1K certificate which is usually handed to you at the end of the ride instead of submitting documents, gas receipts, Spotwalla links, etc and then waiting several months to see if you were approved.

You actually have me wanting to do a ss1000 after I get my airhead going. My uncle is a big bmw guy and lives in las trampas New Mexico so I figure I can do a saddlesore and show him the bike. But I've gots months to plan that

Way to go Big T!!!!! I need to read the whole report, but I am glad your safe. That road gater took a pretty good bite out of the Wing. The next cold one is for you.

POW, glad that wasn't your foot. Nice rig. Too cool...plate, "long distance rider"

What was your expense for this 1 way cc?

I thought when you took off from that bp, I was like , why the he'll doesnet he stop? Finally occured to me, he's headed to the airport to receive his bride. Haha.

That spot really brings it home for the audience. Do you pay for each ping (transmission)? Can you set the frequency of how often it transmits? After you finished, it was not pinging as often as when you were , in combat it seemed (on ride route).

We were willing you to the finish. And it's still raining , a real nice slow rain too down here. Supposed to pick up by weeks end with a 50mph tropical storm for corpus coastal bend area. Sorry to say, looks like it's going to be a disaster with florence on the east coast.

It was fun watching from afar. Better you than me however :lol2:

Congratulations! I understand the difficulty, me and 4 other guys did the RAT “ride around Texas” ride a few years ago. 3500 miles in 75 hours, it was brutal.

I will see you at this year’s Texas Iron Butt party in October. I will either be on a yellow wing the Africa twin.

Congats on enduring the ride. You also saved on gas over a buck a gallon on the last fill up compared to the first :).
Sorry about the bike damage. Glad you are ok. I think you are a friend of Martin Thorndale PD chief. You should stop and see him on way back. He has a new bike.

Spot runs off of satellite via a subscription service. It pulls and records the location along with allowing you to send specific messages like "OK" or "Broke Down" or "Help" along with signaling 911 via the spot service to come and get you. https://www.findmespot.com/en/

The map however is spotwalla and is maintained by a very benevolent guy named Jason (I'm with an e, not me) who doesn't charge for the service even though it does cost him the web servers and fees to google for the use of embedded maps. He does however have a donation page. https://www.spotwalla.com/help/index.php

Just a quick check-in before I leave. I'll respond in the next few days depending upon where we land and how tired I am. The link will continue to be live until we get back home on the 23rd. Be safe out there.

How often do the pings occur ? Or maybe he already said 10 minutes:shrug: most were close together. My question is probably unclear

Here's the pricing list. More $$$ gets you tighter intervals. Once you select your plan you can then select how often to have them shown. Cheapest goes to 10 minutes, but you can get down to 2.5 minutes as well with enough cash.

So must be switchable on the device, I surmised he switched the frequency for less often pings to be able to save money.

You an also adjust the "frequency" of the points in SW. With a route map shown, hit the drop down on the "name of the ride" button ("2018 50CC" in this case), select Adjustments, change the % Fill and hit the Update Map button.

Also, I use SWConnect on my iPhone, connected to SW. I can adjust the Track Logging from 5-10 minutes.

On Android, BubblerGPS is the choice app. It'll store up your points if you lose coverage and upload them when you do. Not bad when you are on the interstates. Also, BubblerGPS is built and maintained by a motorcyclist and designed with long distance rallies in mind. It's a good app and you know the price of the app goes to put gas in a nice guy's motorcycle.

At the time of impact my foot was on my regular peg, otherwise yes, that would not have been a good thing.

Yes, the plate is Long Distance Rider. AZ only allows 5 characters on a moto plate so you have to get creative. Unbeknownst to me at the time, ldrdr is Mike Kneebone's forum name on the GL1800riders.com and when I came back to the forum after a long absence I created the forum name LDRDR. Although the only difference is the capitalization, the system accepted it.

What was your expense for this 1 way cc?
I won't figure that out until I get home.

I thought when you took off from that bp, I was like , why the he'll doesnet he stop? Finally occured to me, he's headed to the airport to receive his bride. Haha.
On the way in, I kept wondering to myself why I had to detour to Jacksonville Beach instead of just getting my final receipt in Jacksonville, but it's tradition so I stuck with it and then headed back north to the hotel.

That spot really brings it home for the audience. Do you pay for each ping (transmission)? Can you set the frequency of how often it transmits? After you finished, it was not pinging as often as when you were , in combat it seemed (on ride route).
My tracker is a Garmin inReach and I pay for the 10 min pings. The benefit of the inReach over my old Spot was the fact that I have satellite texting capability now. The brand new SpotX also can text but they released it about 3 months after I made the decision to jump ship.

I also carry a PLB with me on my person so that if I have an "incident" and wind up separated from my bike, as long as my arms aren't broken I can reach in my pocket and activate the beacon.

Another benefit of the inReach is that I can shut off tracking for a month if I won't be doing any riding and you don't pay for that month.

We were willing you to the finish. And it's still raining , a real nice slow rain too down here. Supposed to pick up by weeks end with a 50mph tropical storm for corpus coastal bend area. Sorry to say, looks like it's going to be a disaster with florence on the east coast.

Thank you. It was great to have the support. My friend Jason is in Jacksonville at the moment and will be leaving tomorrow morning for the run to SD. I hope the rains aren't too bad for him.

This is where we are holed up for two nights. This is an upstairs apartment over the garage / man cave / moto shop owned by Dean Lear and his wife Pam. They finished this all out themselves and are great hosts. It has a full kitchen, bathroom/shower, bed, couches, big screen, Bose sound system, etc.

They even put out mints on the pillows for us.

Dean is the founder of San Jose BMW back in the day. They were (still are) big in Daytona racing / Bonneville / etc. He's retired now but still keeps his fingers in stuff here and there. The Senior TT races at Isle Of Man a few weeks ago ran our forum sticker on several of the bikes because one of our forum members is a former wrench for that team whose riders include John McGuinness, a name some of you might recognize. The team bikes also ran some unobtainium pistons that Dean was able to procure for them. He's an all around good guy.

We first met in Show Low AZ when the AZ Beemers (another forum I'm on) had a RTE at his off-grid place where they had first retired to. They moved here to Ducktown TN because they grew tired of the snow. I'll try to get some photos of the house / property later and post them up.
