Probably the worst dang Copper Canyon ride report ever....

Disclaimer: I’m not that good at putting together a highly dramatized novel about our rides. It takes considerable time and creativity, both of which I don’t have much of. Nevertheless, here is an abbreviated ride report of my and Ms Tailwind’s (Becky) 2016 adventure down in to the Copper Canyons.
My wife and I have been trying to get down to Copper Canyon for at least the last 15 years. We have been near it and over it on many occasions, traveling by small plane to the west coast. We always commented that we really wanted to get down “in” the canyon, either hiking or on bikes. After many scrubbed trips, we finally made it happen this year and boy howdy, it was epic. We will most definitely be doing some more exploring in that area. As we all know, there never is enough time on these things. Originally, we had considered exiting the canyons to the south through El Fuerte and then ship ourselves and the bikes from El Fuerte back up to Chihuahua via the “el Chepe” train which takes less than 24 hours. This would have been nice considering the time constraints we were under and that there are not too many route options to ride back north on without going over many of the same roads we would have traveled down on. Prior to leaving, I talked to several different people at the train company and they all said “no can do” motos anymore, so we had to scratch that idea. Since the train was out of the question we focused on the numerous dirt roads available “in” the canyons. I’m not going to narrate each day, but rather summarize a few of our key takeaways from the trip. Our trip lasted 10 days total.
• The overall trip was epic; we definitely will be going back because there are countless villages and dirt roads to explore in this area
• Doing the trip late November/early December was cold. The weather in Creel was very cold each time we were there. There was a lot of ice on the paved roads entering and leaving Creel in the shady spots. A police vehicle was totaled on one icy spot and the driver was severely injured. I’m thinking September/October may be better months weather wise
• Batopilas seems to be our top choice for a base of operations (day trips). Lots of good dirt heading north, south , east and west from there. Good hotels. Temperatures were nice and warm down in the canyon.
• The road from Batopilas to Urique may be one of the best Dual Sport rides I have ever been on. It’s Epic. Good luck if you’re on a big bike (e.g., GS, etc). I’m sure there are people good enough to ride these loaded up monsters over these challenging roads, but not me. Some portions had not been maintained in what looked like months or years. There were washouts, avalanche slides and deep ruts. In one section there was a broken down 4x4 SUV of some type who’s entire front end suspension and drive was torn completely out from under it. It was just sitting there abandoned.
• Although we did not get “in” the rivers with our bikes, the river levels seemed low and passable during our time there. Had the bridges not been there, we could have walked the bikes across at the current water level with relative ease. I hear this can change in a heartbeat though.
• Becky and I felt safe the whole time we were there. We did have two young guys on foot stop us on one dirt road out in the middle of nowhere. The older of the two was sporting an AR15 platform, the younger had a 1911 sidearm strapped to him. Both had radios. They said they were there for “security” and let us pass thru after determining we were not a threat to anything. They were actually quite nice to us. We saw lots of hardware on this trip, mostly AR15 and Glock.
• Don’t get too confident and cocky with your fancy featherweight KTMs, Reckluse clutches and the like. They are not needed and basically anything will do. On one gnarly, rough, washed out road, a local came thru on his Honda 150 “pizza delivery” type bike. It had worn out street tires and no suspension to speak of. He made it look sooooo easy on that thing.
• Did I say it was cold in Creel this time of year?

Well, I'd like to have one myself. I'm just tongue and cheek trying to give us all a reality check.

I don't understand spanish but I understood that sign and it is hilarious.

I'll pass on both: Don or Ivanka, thank you.

Thanks for posting your RR, David.
