Or worse, everyone stops for gas and one guy says he still has plenty so no need to fill-up. Within 100 miles he's pointing at his tank for a fill-up. :pound:

Typically European vehicles....possibly linked to which side the driver is...(although the same models in mkts where driver is on left..dash is switched...but fuel filler not)
Prob easier to design for either left or right driver than to modify body for filler location

My first car was a Renault, very similar to the top photo in your link. Fuel filler was inside the engine compartment right above the engine.

My first girlfriend's dad was always rebuilding Renault Dauphines, R8s and R10s. Seem to remember that one had the turn signal switch on the right hand side of he steering wheel. Unusual little cars.
 
Never expected gas cap discussion to come out of this. Lol
