I took a new position in the DFW area, so will be here about 50% of the time. I posted on Advrider (same screen name on Advrider) that I can't be anywhere 50% of the time without a bike, so I pick up a 2018 KTM 1090 this week.

I don't much like street riding unless it leads to dirt, and put thousands of dirt miles on my 800XC in Washington, so hoping to add to my adventures by getting hooked up with other dirt warriors in Texas. First thing will be tossing the street oriented stock rubber for something a lot more aggressive, and tossing the front fender for a KTM SX fender so the front wheel will have room to clear rocks and mud...

Welcome to Texas and to TWT!

While you are in the area, you might want to spend a few long weekends in NW Arkansas ;-) Most of your "dirt" riding in Texas will be unpaved county roads as there is virtually no public land here on which you can ride (like the BLM stuff out West).

Good luck riding in the DFW area. That has always been a near death experience every time I have ridden up there :-P The 1090 is a good bike for urban adventure riding though. You are up high so you can see and hopefully be seen.

Welcome! Lots of dual sport riders up here. Most of the dual sport riding in the immediate area is limited to gravel roads. But there are some decent gravel roads SW in the Glen Rose area and south of there.

When you say DFW are you mainly in the D area or the FW area? Anyway, three ongoing social events in the FW area are:

http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18368 Ice cream every Friday night

http://www.twtex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=110791 Tuesday eat dinner

Dahveed, Thanks for the info on the events. just what my wife and I are looking for, meeting other dual sport folks in the area.

Right now we have a VRBO in Grapevine where my office is located, but will have a condo in Frisco in a few weeks. We have rented SUVs to get out of the city in search of back roads, and there seems to be plenty of places to explore on a bike. We try and avoid highway riding, as we got our fill of that on the Harley's we have had.

Tourmeister, I have read a lot about Arkansas and other areas to the east, so that will likely be where we will play. will need to find others with similar dual sport interests to learn the area.

You definitely want to go to the TARA North meeting. Its in Grapevine. Those guys do a monthly ride and they're a great group.

Lots of great riding in NW Arkansas. The Ozarks in general is good.

If you are up for deep sand and/or red clay, you can always come explore Southeast Texas... There is some nice riding in the Davy Crockett NF. If it is wet though... :eek2:

Welcome! I moved to Dallas in October of 2016 from New Hampshire and I love it here. Hopefully you will, too.

I don't find that riding in traffic is terrible here. I have a louder exhaust and get plenty of pop on overrun, so I use that as a safety feature when I have to merge and it's congested. I've only had one or two people try to change lanes into me, but they're easy to manage.

The biggest road riding killer here is traffic. Avoid Loop 12 S on a Friday afternoon, 75N in the afternoon, or 635 through Garland and Mesquite at just about any time save for the late night when most people are in bed.

I don't do much dirt riding, nor do I think my mount would be happy with it, so I can't speak to that.

Happy trails!
