My Next Modification...

The hot setup on the BMW f650 Dakar's is to swap the forks out for a set of wr/yz 250 tubes and 450 triples. I've been scouring over the 300 posts on this mod at ADV and it looks to be very doable for really little expense. Thanks to HarryRichard I'm about to possess the tubes and flea bay is awash in triples, wheels and brake assemblies for relatively nothing. This mod will take 15 pounds off the frontend which will be a very good thing. Looking forward to sharing this with everyone...

Re: My Next Modification...

The front end is soft and dives more then I like it too and I have seen some scary pics of destroyed lower fork tubes due to unexpected impacts. Plus, let's face it, I'm needy.

Re: My Next Modification...

As much as I hate to admit it, it has been spending way to much time on the side stand. We'll fix that now that the weather is getting more agreeable...

Re: My Next Modification...

Had a guy online last night light into me for trying to make my Dakar into a dirtbike. He just could not grasp the concept of my wanting to have a bike that I could ride for 600 miles of pavement, turn off onto a possibly challenging dirt road such as the "Great Divide Ride", then get back on pavement and ride it home. I guess he's just not "there" yet.

Re: My Next Modification...

That's a hoot. Half of the guys with X Challenges are doing all they can to convert them to Dakars.

Re: My Next Modification...

I am spending a lot of time on ADV reading over other peoples YZ fork mods. There's a whole lot to digest...keep the ABS, BMW wheel and Brembo's vs. throw the ABS,wheel and Brembo's and go full YZ front end. I'm going the full YZ front route and throwing the ABS. It's easier/quicker and I will get more weight savings which has got to be a major plus as my Dakar is much more of a pig then any XR650L ever dreamed of being.

Re: My Next Modification...

I know it's heresy to say, but ABS has saved my backside more times that it has compromised a steep down hill. I'm so used to it, the KTM freaks me out when I clamp down on the back brake and pick up speed as the ground gives way.

Re: My Next Modification...

Looking like you are about ready to make the big switch. Soon you will be ready for a nice test ride or two I hope. Hey I see that you mentioned something about riding the CDR. Lynn & I also really want to do this upcoming 2017 run in early June. We are even putting it on our ride Calendar. Not that it means we are totally locked in for sure, but it does mean that we certainly want to be in...for sure.
So, whadayathink?

Re: My Next Modification...

I have read a lot about swapping the forks and the only real issue is fabbing up a mount for the key switch, I know a good welder I will lose 15 lbs on the front end with the swap and an additional 14 lbs once the ABS is removed. I'd like to keep it but I will appreciate the weight savings more and the availability of easily found and affordable extra wheels is too much of a option to go to. Annnnnd I intend to throw the heavy exhaust next and replace it with something much lighter and a little LOUDER. We are noodling on the CDR bigtime. From what I've read it's doable by everyone.

Re: My Next Modification...

We are intrigued at the idea of a haul vehicle escort. Would be great to not carry everything required on the entire trip on our bikes. Sure looks like some fun riding areas. Seems like a shame to have the bike always stuck in super freighter mode. Plus it helps keep a sag vehicle in fairly near proximity to the riders, should it be required. Also offers a daily sit it out option if anyone needed a break.
