It’s Rubber Chicken time again! Please join the New Mexico Off Highway Vehicle Alliance, (NMOHVA) for its 5th Annual Rubber Chicken Ride on October 21-23, 2016.

What is the Rubber Chicken Ride? It is an annual dual-sport motorcycle event in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.

This year’s event is, once again, a fund-raising event to support NMOHVA’s work at preserving, protecting, and promoting motorized recreation in New Mexico. ALL money over and above the cost of hosting the event will go straight to NMOHVA’s Land Action Fund. Last year, NMOHVA donated over $5,000 to Friends of the Box, Inc., a local organization dedicated to re-opening public access in nearby Monticello Canyon (more on this below). You can check out NMOHVA and what we are about at our recently upgraded website:

www.nmohva.org

NMOHVA is working hard to make this year’s event even more fun for the riders.. Here are some of the changes for this year’s event:

1. LIVE MUSIC on Friday night! NMOHVA has engaged “Pint and Half” (Duke and Tami Shepard) to play for us on Friday evening. Duke and Tami are well-known dual sport personalities and their musical career has been skyrocketing! Check them out at:

http://www.pint-and-a-half.com/ and https://www.reverbnation.com/dukesheppard

We have seen them perform and we guarantee a good time!

2. Dinner will be catered at the Pelican Spa (Red Pelican courtyard) on Saturday evening. Catering the event on site will allow us to accommodate more people and serve our riders much faster. It will also allow us to start the raffle much earlier as we can overlap with the dinner and have both in the same space.

3. We are going to publish our suggested dual sport routes (with difficulty ratings) ahead of time so riders have an easier time deciding what routes to enjoy. All of the rides are still “no fee” and completely up to the discretion of the event participant’s discretion. We are identifying more people on more routes for riders to follow. This will help keep the group sizes down and allow riders to better tailor their riding adventures to their desires. We will be identifying more “beginner friendly” and “big bike friendly” rides to accommodate a wider range of riders and skill levels.

4. We are bumping the registration limit to 100 riders this year.

Online registration for the 2016 Rubber Chicken Ride is up and running - http://nmohva.wildapricot.org/event-2191074

Registration for the 2016 event is $80 and includes live music Friday evening, Saturday evening dinner, an event shirt, event stickers, and a chance to win great gear and merchandise donated by the great manufacturer’s, dealers, and venders who support NMOHVA.

All road riding requires a legal, plated bike per New Mexico statutes. There will be no "waiting list" so register early to ensure you get one of the limited slots. We cannot guarantee a T-shirt or the requested size for any registrations after September 28th.

I have been wanting to do this ride for the last couple of years, but something always gets in the way. This year, the dates conflict with Mextrek. :suicide:

Did the ride once. Like it. It'll be hard again to make this it this go around. However rode the area a few months ago and even stayed at the pelican spa.

:tab I went last year with Jfink and Rsquared. We got there a few days early and made the loop over to Silver City, the Gila Cliff Dwellings, Clifton, US 191, stayed at a nice cabin at Hannegan's Meadow just South of Alpine, then did some fun DS riding heading back along the Blue River on Blue River Rd., through Reserve, then down through the NF on FR 94/159/59/52 until we came out just North of ToC on I-25. Then we did the two days of the rally. We took our big bikes and the smaller bikes. I had crazy carb issues with my 530 EXC so we only did about a half day of riding one day then did a great run out to the VLA and Pie Town on the big bikes the next day. The dinner the last night was great and the door prize drawing, etc,... was fun as well. A STRONG word of warning though... 159 is a nightmare if it is wet... I am talking miles and miles of crazy deep cow poo infused mud. Even my pressure washer has been unable to get the stains from that stuff off my hard bags.

:tab We stayed at a nice little place right across the street from the breakfast meet location, Desert View Inn. Cheap, clean rooms, and a cool dude that runs the place. I never did get around to doing a ride report for some reason  The breakfast place also had good dinners. There is an auto part store right across the street as well, which came in handy when I needed a few spare nuts and bolts for the luggage rack after a minor drop in the mud on the 1200 GS. It is a mile or two from the Pelican Spa, so if you want to do any drinking, there is the issue of getting back to the hotel... The Desert View Inn has room for trucks/trailers. He's got a big lot. We had a 3/4 ton truck and 18 foot trailer and it was no problem.

:tab The riding right around ToC is everything from super easy to crazy technical. So there is something for everyone. Even if you take big bikes, you can do the run over to Silver City and back, which is a fantastic ride. Most of the dirt down in the valleys is graded hard packed roads. The only nasty stuff is when you start trying to climb the mountains or run a few of the really narrow valleys (Chloride Gulch I think one is called?).

This is right where 159 and 59 meet. Even though the mud here was not as bad as it had been on 159 for the last 15 miles or so, I managed to get into the middle in the deep stuff where there was less than no traction... Just trying to keep our feet under us while picking up the bike was a real challenge, as was trying to walk it out of the mud under power!

We were thinking that if we could just reach that dry section of road in the distance, it would be all over... WRONG! :lol2: Just over the hill was more miles of mud... :huh2: Even trying to go off in the weeds didn't help. At least we were lucky in that none of us picked up thorns in the tires while trying that. A local later told us that there were some major thorns on some of the bushes in the area.

I don't know what it is about that weekend. Its also Formula 1 in Austin, and Harvest Classic

Maybe we can go on our own John.

It's October. That is when it finally starts to cool down here enough that you can actually enjoy doing things outside again :-P
