I like Weljo2001's tag line. Neil DeGrasse Tyson famously said "The universe is trying to kill you." I guess the reason I've become an old man in a world where men (and women) die young is I have a very healthy respect for the universe, and I avoid playing chicken with physics.

I wouldn't go out and ride that road on a bet, not with those crazy people on it.

True dat. Although, to tell the truth, I feel exactly the same way about I-35 between Ft Worth and San Antonio on any weekend or holiday. Different sort of craziness, but craziness nevertheless.

For our kids, we call that "reality discipline". With Mom and Dad discipline, you might catch a break. With reality discipline, you don't always get a second chance...

Not sure. The only road not opened the day of my ride was to Azusa...

The roads are amazing. They're really worth the ride. Just go during a weekday and you don't get nearly that level of dumbness on the road.

Ortega Highway | SoCal Ride - YouTube
I had no idea who she even was until her death, but since the incident, her pics have been plastered all over Instagram and Facebook. Talk about a **** of a way to get famous.

Obviously a very sad happening, but I quickly became frustrated with how all the online tributes are trying to paint her as some sort of shining example for female riders. She wasn't. Like so many young people today, she was trying her best to become an online celebrity by peddling her looks and pushing limits for attention. She pushed too hard and sadly vaulted herself into eternity way too soon.

For those of you who've never ridden Ortega, it's one of those highways that seems like it should be relatively safe at high speeds, but isn't. It's a widowmaker of a road. I've ridden it twice and saw bad motorcycle crashes both times. Even a seasoned, experienced rider should think twice before amping things up on Ortega, and she wasn't old enough to be either.

Perhaps the saddest thing about this girl's death is that her mom died years back and she recently lost her dad due to illness. Now she has passed on so unnecessarily. My heart definitely goes out to any remaining family she may have.

Re: Why I Don't Ride Angeles Crest Hwy On The Weekends

That pretty well sums it up, Tim. I have no truck with people doing risky things for recreation as long as they don't take anybody with them -- which she thankfully didn't. But people who die in pursuit of their hobbies don't do so for some greater good. They don't bring justice to the world. They don't protect our liberty. They're not heroes. Sadly, they're just dead. Instances like this should be used to remind the riding (or potential riding) public that (1) the risk of riding is very real, and (2) for those who need to scratch the speed itch, track days are a much safer way to do so.

Re: Why I Don't Ride Angeles Crest Hwy On The Weekends

I'm sorry to hear about Annette Carrion and her tragic accident. I'd watched her YT vids before with the most recent a a few days ago about her switch from a Daytona 675 to a Striple, a bike I'd considered before my Shiver. Deepest condolences to her family, friends, and fans. A terrible loss for our riding community.

I have a lot more respect for these women. Irish Roadracing, makes the Angels Crest look like the kiddie ride at the fair. How about Yvonne who started riding & racing at 47 because, well why not try something new?

What was she riding? Triumph 1050? Striple? Wonder if she had the camera going? Gravity can be real mean sometimes.

Yeah but the during their roadracing, it's an organized event with the roads closed to cage traffic and some modicum of hazard removal from the roads.

Folks ride roads like The Ortega, Palomar, ect like they're in a race but get to contend with cages over the line, rocks in the roads, oil spills, ect.

I used to run into guys up at Palomar that would use a box truck to haul their bikes up there unload them and spend both days of a weekend only riding the south and east grade roads on Palomar. That's a 18 mile stretch of road they'd ride for a whole weekend. Seems like it would get old after a while.

For those who don't know these are the roads on Palomar Mtn in California that is a very popular spot for people to go.

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/33.2...e3!4m2!4m1!3e0

Here's the Ortega Hwy where the Carrion lady went off the road

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/33.6...e3!4m2!4m1!3e0

I've been on that road more than a few times and there's not a whole lot of guard rails on the road. If you low side or high side and go off the side it's a long way down in many places. Combine that with people riding it like a race track and the typical cages and road hazards, it's a road that eats people who don't respect it, same for the grade roads, and Muholland, and countless others.

Yea, Irish road racing is downright bonkers.

I have a coworker in Ireland who used to ride with Martin Finnegan. He's not so much into Irish Road Racing anymore due to loss of his friend.
