I have a 650 KLR and have a Garmen gps mounted and connected to 2 unused female connections(connections have always been there) behind my headlight. The GPS worked fine as long as the rpms were up beyond an idle. At idle, the unit would practically shut off and then come back as rpms increased. I thought I would connect it directly to the battery and after doing so, it blows a fuse in the cig.lighter connection that I was using before. I have checked the connections and all is secure. I cannot figure out the problem and would appreciate any help??

Re: GPS connection to KLR electrical
Which Garmin unit? I had a cigarette adapter for one of my Garmins go bad inside next to the fuse which shorted it out and would blow the fuse on the cig adapter all the time.
When you have it connected to the power behind the headlight, is that straight to the unit or through a cig adapter?

Re: GPS connection to KLR electrical
It is a nuvi 205w. When it was connected behind the headlight, I used the same cig. adapter/plug. It worked fine except for the low rpm issue.
Thanks for responding |

Re: GPS connection to KLR electrical
I have a KLR and rigged up a marine cig./acc. unit on my handle bars and use a
cig. adaptor w/my garmin, oregon 400. I wired it straight to my batt and put an in line fuse in it. Works great! cig. adaptor) on the bike because of theft, so I dont worry about it running down my batt. Its only pluged in when I'm running.

Re: GPS connection to KLR electrical
My garmin has a connector for the back of the garmin and the other end is an HDMI connector that plugs into the cig lighter male end. I wonder if that is my problem. What connector does yours have?

Re: GPS connection to KLR electrical
Actually, it is a mini-usb connection.
I'd start by checking the voltage at the cig socket when the bike is idling. No GPS hooked, just check the socket. If that is low then that would be where to focus. Some bike have some AC lines too or the lines you used don't get full 12v DC. Anyway, time to use a voltmeter and make sure the socket and the lines you tapped into have the voltage you need. Amp requirements for the usb connection are pretty low (less than 1amp) so that shouldn't be the problem.

Re: GPS connection to KLR electrical
Yep mini-usb. Go straight to the batt., fuse it, and no worrys. That way if it shorts out for any reason it doesn't take out anything else. Just blows the fuse. Oh yea.... put the fuse within 2-3 inchs of the batt.

Re: GPS connection to KLR electrical
FWIW, I have thusfar had good results with the Tapp Lite USB Power Port wired directly to the battery on my KLX250S & R850R: http://www.3brpowersports.com/TAPP_lite.htm
