Plan:
Phoenix to Kingman, to Ontario OR, to Kalispell MT, to the Canadian border, to Alpine WY, to Denver, and then home.

Reason:
I want to color in ID, OR, WA on my "states ridden in" map, and to attend the Iron Butt Association International Meet in Denver for four days.

Reality:
We left Chandler at 3:15 this afternoon. The temp inside the garage was 109; the temp on the way to I-10 was 111, the temps riding into Phoenix went from 113 to 115 to a high of 117. We did not see any temps below 105 until after 7 pm when we were east of Kingman with a rain shower behind us. We finally saw a low of 91 when we checked into the hotel.

Observation:
105 is downright comfortable when you're dressed appropriately (LD Comfort) and well hydrated. I should say... downright comfortable compared to the 117 temps. Now THAT was hot. I'm glad I soaked my gear before I left the house, but I still emptied the better part of my 32 oz Butler Cup in under an hour.

It's now pushing 9 pm and the goal is to wake at 0330, pack, and be on the road before 5 am. Breakfast in North Las Vegas, lunch somewhere, and dinner in Ontario OR sometime tomorrow evening.

To be continued...

Hit the NV/ID border at 4 pm today and then the ID/OR border at 7:45 pm. Lots and lots of smoke/haze from ID fires. The haze started in northern NV and continued all the way across the state in Idaho. It didn't start clearing until reaching the Oregon border. Off to Kalispell MT tomorrow.

A few photos have been taken but I haven't even reviewed them yet.

Moving average for the two days is 68 mph.
Total saddle time is 14:40.
Total miles so far is 1003.

This sounds like an awesome trip. Just stay hydrated and keep us posted.

In the hotel in Kalispell MT. Hwy 95 to Clarkston WA was GREAT, as was Hwy 12 up to Lolo Pass and then into Montana.

Brenda took a lot of photos today but I haven't reviewed any of them yet. Rode around Flathead Lake to get here. Gorgeous scenery.

Moving avg speed: 64
Saddle time: 24:56
Total milage so far: 1588

No update yesterday. My ignition key is stuck in my ignition switch. We bypassed Yellowstone in order to make it to Idaho Falls in case I needed to have a dealer work on the bike. I can turn the bike on/off but I just can't remove the key.

Some of my IBA buddies have talked about just swapping it while I'm here in Denver for the meet, but if not, I'll just wait until I get back to Phoenix to deal with it.

I just copied the photos to the laptop; there are just shy of 600 photos so far and I've only reviewed three of them so the majority of the ride report will have to wait until I get back home.

Glacier National Park is definitely something you need to put on your bucket list if you haven't already been there. Fantastic place.

2,797 miles since Friday
64 mph moving average
43H 47M in the saddle

I'm now in Denver, surrounded by my kind... crazy, LD riders. I just met a guy in the parking lot that is from Florida. He and a friend rode to Beaumont and then rode a BBG (Bun Burner Gold = 1500+ miles in 24 hours) to get here. Lots and lots of hardcore folks are here and more will be arriving tomorrow. Lots of Iron Butt Rally competitors.

The Butt Lite ends here and those riders will be attending their own banquet on Thursday evening.

I take my Rookie Rally training class tomorrow afternoon, and then at 0345 on Thursday Brenda and I begin our first competitive rally ending at 2 pm, and then scoring until 4 pm.

LD riding is not everyone's cup of tea, but it's what I enjoy so this event for me is really, really cool.

In looking at your route, you've been though some great places. I just did a return to Glacier my self a few weeks ago. But choose to go check out Beartooth Pass ( where I had not been ) rather than continue to Washington, ( where I had been ) . Your right on the LD runs, Loved it in the early '90's but body and mind say NO in the early 2010's LOL. enjoy.

As seen from the vendor area in the atrium of the Marriott. I wonder who would hang such a thing? :trust:

That lonesome stretch of highway is a scary place to have a heat related illness. I guess the "dry" heat minimizes that to some degree.

I did Copper Mountain, Colorado to Austin almost non-stop but it was 107 when I hit Lubbock. I kept going but by late afternoon I was seeing faint yellow spots. I vowed never again to ride sustained distances with 100+ heat. Riding is not a race to me.

The evaporative cooling vest helps a great deal.

Red, read my various threads on LD Comfort. It works much better than the cooling vest when utilized properly.

Not much time for an update... need to get to breakfast...

Attended a Rally Routing class on Wednesday and then rode my first Rally yesterday.

I did my planning until about 9:30 pm and then was up at 2:30 the next morning. Got the bike staged/inspected and then we were released at 4 am. First stop was Coors Field, about 10 minutes away. Then it was a real cluster as 25 riders tried to get their photo taken of their rally flag at the Branch Ricky statute.

After several attempts to get a halfway eligible photo we headed to the next location two hours away and through 10,000 foot mountain passes and 37 degree temps. We (Brenda was my co-plot) were C-O-L-D. Very poor planning on my part. The Gerbings weren't doing me much good in the saddle bag.

At the next stop I pulled them out and hooked them up and life was MUCH nicer after that. This stop was at the Prunes Monument in Fairplay. Prunes was a donkey in this gold mining town. Miners would send him into town with a list of supplies and he would return fully loaded to the camps.

Time to go eat. Lots of seminars today. I'll update this post later and add some photos.

And... I'll tell you how these rookies did in their first rally. :trust:

We just found out that a special "feedback" session is going to be held in 30 minutes to recap the Rally we rode yesterday. I guess more folks in addition to me wanted to know how they compared to the others even though it was a "non-competitive" rally. ;-)

As for me, I want to know what strategies the top dogs used so I can improve my future opportunities.

Attended the How I Screwed The Pooch seminar this morning. This is a session presented at each IBA Meet with three DNF riders discussing what they did wrong to not finish the IBR in prior years. Also attended a How To Pack Light session as we tend to really load down the Wing on any trips longer than a weekend.

More later...

Too bad you couldn't have been there yesterday morning at 0415 to see the ensuing chaos. You would have laughed yourself into a coma.

The feedback session STILL didn't tell us how we ranked, but they have agreed to share all the email addresses with each of us, so we'll be able to share that info amongst ourselves if we choose to do so.

We did a roundtable discussion in which each of us talked out what we learned, what we really didn't like, what we did like, etc. It was good to hear that I was one of 3-4 others that rode into the mountains with the Gerbings in the saddlebags instead of being on my body.

Had a good keynote presentation by Lee Parks (former racer, Total Control training, author, etc) and he was pretty entertaining. He has a good line of gloves and I bought a pair of those yesterday.

Home safe and sound. Met several TWT members in Denver. I'll put together an actual ride report in the next week or two with photos and descriptions, etc.

ps. Had a GREAT time.

I've been following your posts & photos on Facebook from my phone and looking forward to seeing it all brought together in a RR and seeing it on the computer instead of this phone.

Glad y'all made it home safe and sound and away from those terrible temps you faced on the trip.

Posting with Tapatalk for iPhone.

Yeah, it was 51 when we left Denver at 4 am yesterday. Saw a low of 42 as we continued south toward Pueblo, but then it was still 102 as we rolled into the driveway at 7:30 last night. That Colorado weather sure was nice.

Just computed the mileage. I was surprised.

2797 to Denver
435 riding the IBA Rally
867 to get home
=================

4099

We also rode around Denver a bit so a total of about 4,200 miles for the ten day trip and 3 of those days the bike really didn't move.

4200/7 = 600/day

No lollygagging there. No time to stop and smell the roses either.

Still working on photos. Will try to post an actual ride report this weekend.
