Bastrop Area Dual Sport Rides

Great riding with everybody yesterday. I hope to make this a regular occurrence this summer. Does anyone know if there is public river access anywhere close? Going for a swim after the ride would have been perfect. Of course, a couple of us almost went swimming anyway :)

Couple days more notice please.

Look up Lost Pines Nature Trail Park on Riverside Dr. That's a great swimming spot and where I always pulled my kayak out of the river.

Thinking about heading to Bastrop this Sunday, assuming I get my maintenance done on Saturday. Anybody interested?

Heading to Bastrop on the DRZ Sunday morning. Meet at the Texaco, 14400 FM 969, Austin, TX 78724 at 8:15 to ride out, or Buc-ee's in Bastrop at 9:00.

Just pieced the DRZ back together, so I'll see everybody (anybody?) in the morning.

I’m here at 14400 FM 969.

Well, that was fun. I'm a noob at off-road riding. I've taken the Ural and Scrambler on the more up-kept dirt roads in the hill country, but nothing like the stuff in Bastrop. That was the most difficult stuff I've yet ridden, and I did it on the Scrambler. I think I need a real dual-sport bike. That XT250 seems so light and bike-like in comparison to the Scrambler. I've been looking toward getting another KLR or a DR650. After today's ride, I'm thinking more along the lines of one of the 250 dual sports or maybe up to the DRZ400.

Thanks for letting a noob tag along. I learned a lot. Just over 20 minutes of that and my fore-arms were burning and my hands were numb. Yeah, I need a more appropriate bike. But after today's ride, I'm sure those trails are going to seem easy on a 250.

Oh yeah, I can't wait to get my Ural out of the shop and put the 2WD shaft back on and give those trails a go.

Awesome, thanks for posting that. I hope you had a good time.

Mr Waller, since you have a history with Kawasaki I suggest the KLR250. Very excellent basic bike, easy to find in good used condition at decent prices. Very reliable and very capable with inexpensive tweaks. many go too far with too expensive too sophisticated bikes and throw lots of $$$ at them. If you get serious that is fine but I recommend a slow and steady/fun based approach. The beauty of the KLR is great resale if maintained, folks are always looking for one. Good luck.

There are tougher spots there than what it looks like you rode. I haven't been in a few years though.

^^^^

Yeah, there are tougher parts, I'm sure. I've really got no experience riding off road, just the unpaved roads you find around Utopia and Bandera. I've rode Hackberry Road several times and have done the Lone Star Loop portion from around Pleasonton to around Bandera. I'd like to get a lighter bike, one that I can ride off road with more confidence, so I can ride without fear of tearing up if I drop it or have fear that I might not be able to pick it back up. The Scrambler is my work commuter bike, so I can't afford to tear it up.

If I were in your shoes I would get a lighter bike that could also do highway fairly easy. Honestly I think you need two more bikes. A 650 and something like a Ktm 2 stroke. That way you have all the riding in Texas covered

Here are some highlights pictures extracted from video. I'll post the edited video in the near future.
