Post Breakfast Ride Information
The Goldthwaite 499.7, 2-day overnight ride, starting 5/19/18 after the @ 9a Backyard Bistro TARA/SA breakfast on Saturday in Pipe Creek, overnighting in Goldthwaite, then a route back to near Bandera on Sunday, 5/20/18.

If anyone is up for a post breakfast ride see the optional route map below. Groups usually take off around 10am. The route is a no host self-guided GPS ride, as the ride is self-guided join a group or lead one.

The post Adventure Breakfast rides are all about fun, camaraderie and being safe. Some groups will focus on completing the route, others will just relax and ride to their cut off time then break off and head home.

A group size of 4 - 6 ride is optimal, with about a maximum of 8, grouping by bike size or desired pace is also beneficial if possible.

Rain date information will be posted on the Thursday before the ride if necessary.

Route information & Map
*Disclaimer - I build the routes on my computer using the Roads of Texas map book as my guide which is the best and most accurate I have used, but not perfect, and Furkot's mapping program. So the route may not be 100% accurate. I do not pre-ride the route, it's an adventure for me also. Road closures, legal status, conditions and routing of county roads can change. If in doubt, turn around and find another route - DO NOT trespass. If a landowner says you are on private property, don't argue, politely ask for directions to get back to a public road.

Can't make the start in Pipe Creek? Ride from wherever you are and meet up in Goldthwaite for Adventure Rider fellowship.

For those that join my group
When I lead a group I don’t stop for lunch in a restaurant, I'm in the office all week so when I'm on a ride I want to spend as much time as possible in nature. I plan a stop about midway out in the country for snacks or a sandwich I bring with me, then of course there are the planned fuel stops.

I stop at every corner without a clear / obvious direction to continue and wait for the entire group and make sure the last rider sees the proper way to go, there is NEVER a need to ride above your comfort level to keep up, we won’t leave you, I encourage riders to spread out to avoid the dust. The daisy chain method also works well, especially when its extremely dusty to keep the group even more spread out, the rider in front makes sure the rider behind makes the corner and so on until the sweep rider makes the corner. As long as the rider in front takes responsibility for the rider behind no one gets lost. However please tell someone in the group if your plans change and you decide to break off from the group, that prevents you being searched for.

Safety and rider etiquette
Having your emergency contact information on you and having that information readily available is critical. This is important not just for group rides but everyday. Even though you may have a buddy along on the ride you may get separated on the road.
At minimum:
Name
Your street
Your town, state, Zip code
Driver's license # & state
Emergency contact
Emergency Phone
I taped mine on the bottom of the visor of my dual sport helmet, I also taped another on the back side of my fairing near the dash. The important thing is that it is easy for anyone to find.

Respect landowners and other road users, slow down and ride quietly when passing, people, vehicles, animals, homes, etc.

Awe man--this coincides with Ron's fish fry. :-(

Re: Adventure Rider Breakfast Series - 2 day ride, 5/19-20/18 departing Backyard Bist

I'm changing this to a 2-day ride, overnighting in Goldthwaite.

Anyone have a lodging recommendation in Goldthwaite?

Also, camping?

Sander,
Glad to see you coming to Goldthwaite. We got a nice city park, but there is no camping allowed. The motel in town I would recommend is the Redbud Inn (325-648-3061).
Or you can camp at mine and Kory's place about 10 miles south off Hwy 183. Kory has to work that weekend. I was at Bend State Park last weekend, I think you have to call ahead and reserve, it's about 40 miles from Goldthwaite. San Saba's about 25 miles away, I believe there is some camping there.

Thanks Monte!

I'm excited to ride in the area, San Saba is the furthest north I've been on an adventure ride. Looking forward to seeing the Regency Bridge.

Thanks for the offer for campers!

I tried the Redbud but they're full, the clerk did say try back in case of cancellations. To be safe I made a reservation at Relax Inn.

They are giving us a single rate of $45 and double $50, when mentioning the motorcycle ride rate.

Re: Adventure Rider Breakfast Series - 2 day ride, 5/19-20/18 departing Backyard Bist

The DQ is across from the Relax Inn, Peabody's (all types) is about 1 block south of the square, then there are two Mexican food places, one east side of square and one north side of town. The best burgers are at Cahoots at the Exxon station. If you want to drink a beer with your meal you will have to eat at one of the Mexican food places.
I've got a RV with a couple of beds and a place to pitch tents if needed.
I'll probably ride one leg, either coming or going.

Good info Brian,
When I called the Relax Inn last night and talked to the clerk I was asked how many rooms we would need, I guessed 5-10, she said that would be no problem. One room left could be the priceline allotment. I was surprised the Redbud was booked, no events that weekend that I see here - https://www.millscountychamber.com/events.html As always for those that are thinking about moteling it, book early.

Thanks Monte for the area advice!

This looks good for early take off breakfast, opens at 6am on Sunday according to Google maps.

Gotta love the superstar internet reviewers... Kayla outlaw  says it is mediocre food and service with small town atmosphere. SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD ONE TO ME!

Re: Adventure Rider Breakfast Series - 2 day ride, 5/19-20/18 departing Backyard Bist

I believe all of them will be open Sunday morning.
Peabody's is in an old stone building that use to be a wool and mohair grading building.

Dang Sander, wish I could make it, and it's an overnight too. I think I'm gonna be at Expodition Overland West, in Flagstaff.

So, I've got this on my calendar as a tentative. Sander, would you say this was a Strom route, or a DRZ route?

Like most hill country county road rides this is more adventure style than dual sport.

However, Saturday's route does include Sandy Creek and may include a super secret option, but the SSO will probably be out and back so those that don't want to do it don't have to.

Sunday has some water crossings around Doss but they shouldn't be too bad.

This is highest I've seen Threadgill Creek.

Thanks for the info, Sander. Turns out I'm working on Sunday, so I'll be riding the Strom and slabbing back from Goldwaithe on Saturday night. See you there.

Count me in. Two days for me.
I reserved a room at the Relax Inn.

Thanks for organizing this Sander

I am in for this ride. Have had fun on the rides he puts together. It has been a while since ridding with you guys. I will trailer up early Saturday morning, hope to hook up with Sanders and ride up. I will have to find a place to leave my truck and trailer for the weekend.

I doubt I can get away for two days, but might be able to ride up on Saturday and slab home as well. If I make it I'll be on the Scrambler, if you think it can take the route.

Harold,

Three options:

Alsatian Steinbach House Park in Castroville.

At the Backyard Bistro, I would give them a call though, I think Brian has reached out to them already to leave his rig there.

Working on another Castroville option...

A group of us are riding out Friday night to Kerrville, then going the Saturday ride. Slabbing back to Austin Saturday night. Africa Twin, VStrom, and two KLRs. Feel free to tag along.

It you can bend the Scrambler to your will like you do the Ural, no problem! Mostly typical hill country county roads. However, see post 18.
