Re: Please pray for my Mom's sister - possible stroke

Thanks for the update, Scott. You know she's in my prayers, as are your mom and the rest of the family. Phyllis has always been a smart, classy lady -- patient with everyone's shortcomings but her own.

It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a ‘dismal science.' But the myth of the rule of law does more than render the people submissive to state authority; it also turns them into the state's accomplices in the exercise of its power. For people who would ordinarily consider it a great evil to deprive individuals of their rights or oppress politically powerless minority groups will respond with patriotic fervor when these same actions are described as upholding the rule of law. - John Hasnas

Re: Please pray for my Mom's sister - possible stroke

When picking an assisted living place in Texas be aware there are two types (A and B I think). Most assisted living places do not provide "Care and attendance" such as help getting out of bed or dressing or using the restroom. I believe these are type A. This creates two problems. First the staff gets overstretched helping people that really need the next level of care and so staff is never around. Second if you get too week to get out of bed on your own you are supposed to move out. Or if you mental facilities deteriorate you must move out. But even worse.... if you fall down and get sent to a hospital they will not let you return until you can again get out of bed etc on your own. If your mental facilities have deteriorated they won't let you return at all. One final problem is that the elderly person who really should move to a type B but is still in a type A often falls down trying to do it all themselves. If you move into a type A and need help you can often hire in help. However, this gets VERY expensive.

Type B assisted living places usually offer a package price for care and attendance"transfers" / getting out of bed etc. You don't have to use it (nor pay for it) when you first go in but as your facilities deteriorate you can add on the package without having to move. The assistance package price is often much less than hiring a dedicated 24 our care person because you share the staff with other residents.

Finally facilities that have a separate "memory wing" will make your stay much more pleasant.

After our personal experience with both types, I would not move a family member into a facility unless they were this second type and they had a separate memory wing.

Feel free to pm me a phone number if you would like to discuss this. I wish I knew then (When my mother went to a type A assisted living) what I know now.

For a few years now, she has been in the type were she basically has an apartment but they don't provide any care. There are common areas and a common dining facility so residents don't have to prepare meals, but they can do so in their apartments if the want. They are responsible for their daily care, medicines, doctor visits, and so on. She has loved it. The same facility is now opening a wing that is for people that need daily care, help with medications, etc,.... much more like what you would normally think of when you think of a nursing home. This is the type on which dad placed a deposit for her. The new wing should be open in a few months.
