HELP:Battery/Charging issue

Like a dingbat, I left my key in the bike yesterday for a couple of hours. I realized it and come outside. The bike obviously was dead as a doornail. I got a jump, and the bike was idling ok. I went to take off, and the bike just died.

I put in a new battery this morning, $76 later, and the turn signals and headlight work, but the bike will not even try to crank over.

Did I break the stator, or something else? I need advice on how to fix my dumb mistake.

Re: HELP:Battery/Charging issue

Either you popped a fuse removing the jumper cables (any sparks?) or when you jump started got too much current and it fried your starter switch. The small push buttons on the bars can't handle too much juice. Try putting battery power direct to the starter.

Did you accidentally activate the O-N-O-F-F Modulator?

Re: HELP:Battery/Charging issue

No but I did leave it in first when it conked out on me. I was trying to start the bike in first, without the clutch in.

I put the new battery back in and it fired up.

Your old battery is probably still fine, though discharged. Hook it up to a Battery Tender and keep it as a back up. BTW, a Tender will fully recharge a dead battery - $30 for a BT Jr. vs. $76 for a new (unneeded) battery.
