My comment was for practically free NF (National Forest) OHV area's. Yes there are some daily use fee OHV area's but you will pay as much to ride one day as you will in the NF for an entire year.

Just wait for when all the root cutting starts killing off trees at SHNF. Then they'll close the trails permanently.

Texas has much to offer but prime OHV riding is not up high on the list. This won't change either as just not enough public land available.

They have tried to put on an enduro there and last year canceled it. SHNF is the largest of all those. I kinda feel like Tourmaster.... Pay taxes and everywhere else robs them and leave SHNF to depend on volunteers. The issue I have is you can't touch a tree with a saw as a volunteer until you have have paid for the USF sawyer courses out of your own pocket and time. That is pretty ridiculous. Now we have ludicrous rules about roots requiring even more man hours and use of more power equipment. Now we need to drag a 1500 dollar or better stump grinder down the trail to grind out roots....

I make similar comments on ODODB site and get shot down for being negative, but it is frustrating, then we fight each other. So I just stay away as others have.

If i lived closer id work there. Its fun to ride. Barnwell is cheap. 60 bucks a year plus sticker. 15 bucks a turn. Cheaper than anything else close to me. Never crowded for bikes and you realy dont see quads and SXS much. On share the trails to get from section to section. Marked one way. Its nice

Yep... one of the largest states amd smallest public use lands. OHV is a very small dot! SHNF is about the only one you can ride in Texas IIRC.

I had 6.8" of rain and a I am about 6 miles from Kelly's Pond. 60% chance Tuesday and another round the weekend after. Very soggy around here. rh

Went out today, little sloppy but the guys did a great job on the trails. 21 out of 85 miles open. A lot still needs to happen. Hopefully one day. I don't think the eastside has even been touched but not sure. Balloon and string next.

IMPORTANT!!! PLEASE READ...

DO YOU WANT A CYCLIST AS YOUR MOTORIZED REPRESENTATIVE IN THE FOREST?

The Sam Houston Coalition is having a vote at 8:00am on May 5th which includes the Motorized Representative for the Sam Houston National Forest. I personally have nominated ED PONIKVAR to continue being our Motorized Rep. for another year. The other option is a cyclist with a vendetta, so if you want a cyclist representing you in the forest just stay home.

Ed Ponikvar has done a lot to improve and motivate to the point of being over bearing and annoying, but I feel that's what it takes. He is a strong voice for the Motorized community helping to guide us in the right direction in getting our forest back and on track with the rest of the nation.
Ed and a team of die-hard volunteers were a vital part in getting us the forest service equipment to work on the trail, and guiding local volunteers to be able to operate that equipment. Developing a way to accurately catalog our volunteer hours to help pay for grants and map the trail system damage to be repaired. Also he's been working with the AMA, local, state and federal government officials to figure out what needs to be done and rooting through the government B.S. to do so. He's done so much these last few years and I want to keep the ball rolling in the right direction.
