Hydration Packs on sale

Bike Nashbar has a number of different hydration packs (Camelbak style things) on sale, great values, for those of you wanting lots of water. Also have various good quality bicycle shorts on sale, excellent solution to monkey hiny. Anddd, if you want a multi tool...not like a Leatherman...search for it.

Half price and more on lots of stuff. I've ordered from them for many years, never a problem.

Re: Hydration Packs on sale

Drinking water throughout the ride has proven to be very crucial to me staying alert on long, hot days in the saddle. Sure, I get jokes all the time because I take in more than I sweat out... but I'd rather make the group stop for a 'comfort break' than to pick me up off the side of the road due to dehydration.

Re: Hydration Packs on sale

I used to buy from Bike Nashbar back when I actually rode my Cannondale rather than it just hanging in the garage, always had good service from them.

I don't have to worry about a "comfort break" in the hot weather, I have no problems prespiring in the heat or even when it is cold. I topped off my Camelbak twice on the trip up to OKC for Fathers Day last year, I didn't need to stop for that reason. I usually stopped for a refill, gas and a stretch.

Re: Hydration Packs on sale

The fact that you're not peeing just means that you're still not drinking enough.

Re: Hydration Packs on sale

I picked up a camelback knock-off from Costco awhile back.... it's a little bulkier than the original because it's also a backpack but what a difference it makes when riding in the heat. Best part..... only 20 bucks. Works just as well IMHO. I used it today during a 225 mile romp and was glad I had it. I still was hot and tired but just felt a whole lot better than rides without it.

Re: Hydration Packs on sale

I second the Costco one. In fact, I used it today.

I have a Camelbak Hawg and it's nice but a bit bulky for the bike.

I was trying to delicately say that I often need to stop and pee MNAY times on a ride when I keep refilling my pack. I've gotten used to just pulling off the road and going in the bushes, though. Men aren;t the only ones!

I just sweat it all out for the most part, I was just trying to phrase it delicately also.

Thanks for posting this info Mark. I ordered one just a few moments ago.

I've always heard that these things are the cat's meow for hot weather riding. I will be testing mine out soon.

There are a few tricks for best use. Personally, I really only like drinking water when it's cold. After taking a few sips, I blow the water in the hose back into the bag, and then I never have that "first sip is hot and gross" problem. If the day is set to be 95+, then I fill it all the way to the top with ice, fill in the rest of the bladder with water, then refill with ice as needed along the way. Most convenience stores will let you use their ice machine if you buy a bottle of water (or other drink).

I think there has been maybe one occasion when the ice didn't fully melt by the time I needed the water. Most times, a full 72oz. will get me from start to lunch, then another refill halfway home. It's always cold and refreshing.

Most convenience stores will allow you to buy a jumbo cup of ice too.... the price is a little steep for what you get (25 - 50 cents per cup so far) but many times I just need the ice and not any additional water/drink. On a group ride you could by an 8 pound bag for a buck and change and fill everyone's up with ice.

Re: Hydration Packs on sale

In the past, I've taken the bladder & filled it part way & then froze it over night -- filling it with water the next day. Be sure to clean it out good it you use anything besides water. Drinks like gatorade have sugar in it & can leave your pack slimy if you don't clean them out right away.

Re: Hydration Packs on sale

Most restaurant will refill you with water and ice at no charge if you are eating there. Most of the waiters/waitresses will stand there and watch you. Apparently, few of them have seen anything like a Camel-bak Mine will keep water cold for a pretty long time even without ice. Snoop on the other hand has a "thing" about having ice in her drinks
