San Angelo M/C Officer down but not out

Police Officer injured in collision

By Staff report
June 17, 2006

A San Angelo police officer suffered minor injuries in a two-vehicle collision Friday morning. The collision happened about 10 a.m. just off the Houston Harte Freeway near the Howard Street exit on Freeland Street.

San Angelo firefighters along with San Angelo Police Chief Tim Vasquez (third from left) and Sgt. Rose Garcia responded to the collision involving motorcycle Officer Jon Gann and a pickup.

The officer was taken to Shannon Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries. The driver and passengers in the pickup were not injured.

It was not clear Friday afternoon what caused the crash or whether anyone was cited.

Jon is not new to bikes, and is also one of our very active Geocachers. His better half is on Active Duty in Iraq. As a pseudo-single dad, we are hoping for the best outcome to a bad situation. The paper showed his bike up against the curb, looking like he had to lay it down.

This exit is a long one where both exit ramp and side street parallel each other for a long way. It is one you would expect folks to see a m/c running alongside you, esp. a LEO one. And just down the street from a Fire Dept substation. Hope to get more today on what happened.

Any details on the accident? I've been told to RIDE AS IF I'M INVISIBLE but sometimes you don't even see it coming. I hope Officer Gann heals up quickly.

When I had my accident on the Valkyrie (9/03) I was on Augusta Drive approaching a stop sign doing about 25-30 mph. A pickup truck pulled to the end of a driveway about 1/8 of a mile from the stop sign I was approaching.

He stopped. Eased forward about 2 feet and stopped again. I was approaching from his left. Turns out when he eased forward and stopped a second time he was looking to his right.

When the car approaching from his right passed he stepped on the gas.

I was about 10 feet from him when he hit the gas. The front left corner of his bumper hit my front fork - that's how close I was.

I had no time to swerve, brake, honk or anything else. Just hit the truck and go flying thru the air.

It was 5 in the after noon, the sun was shining, and I was on a bright Orange and Chrome Valkyrie.

HE SAID HE DID NOT SEE ME! That's because he never bothered to look in my direction!

Expect every cage out there to try to hit you and even then you can't anticipate all of them.
