Motard riding fools in the greater Austin area?

Who rides a Motard in or around the Austin area?

Where do you ride?

When do you ride?

What do you ride?

Real hard finding hooligans in the Austin Area. Not Stunta's. But riders who like to mix up the street/track with some dirt on Tards.

Post up and let me know if you want to ride sometime.

Not me, but I was wondering how you like your DRZSM? How is it on the Highway?

Re: Motard riding fools in the greater Austin area?

Well I had the DRZ400S model in 2001 and never had an issue and loved the bike until I rode my first CRF in 03. It buzzes along at 70-75 with no issues. The seat is not very comfortable if you’re not a Monkey Butt.
It's very reliable and cheap. It doesn't have much for horsepower so once you get your momentum up you want to stay off the brake as much as possible. 1st valve check is 14,000 miles. Not like my CRF, every other week. Getting little less than 50 miles per gallon right now with a few mods.
Suspension is off the RM Dirt bike so each much better equipped for mods than even the E model DRZ.
If I had to have one bike this would prolly be it with a set of dirt tires. It's much better than my XR650L for turning but has nowhere near the power of the XR.
It's pretty stable on the highway but like any light bike it kicks your butt after so many miles. I go up to Dallas from Austin quite a bit and the 200 miles is just about at the comfort level that one might want to stop along the way. I have done 400 miles plus only stopping for gas once and it was a little rough.
Grin for buck value the only other bike that I think beats it out for road and dirt is the XR650R. But the rider could easily make the difference on that as the DRZ in Motard trim out performs the XRR in Motard trim for the buck value.

So run down and buy one and get to tarding

My brother rides a KTM motard around town. I'll give him a call and tell him to check in here.

Re: Motard riding fools in the greater Austin area?

What I'm waitin' on and have been for several years is someone to come up with a supermoto series at the amateur level in Texas. I road race a mini tard and flat track an XR, but would like to mix it up on a real supermoto track before I'm too danged old to bother.

It must be really hard to come up with a track. CMRA was talking about it for a while when Brooks Gremmels was running things, but it never got done. I always thought either Cresson or Oak Hill would be a spot for it. I reckon Oak Hill would be more possible, but it's really crowded ther for space.

I'd love to, but working for a living stinks....and it's been crazy lately.

Even thought about selling the DRZ

I here you about getting old. But don't worry they'll have a Senior Vet class for us old ones. But I think it's safer than Road Racing.

I contacted Cycle Ranch MX Park off a rumor that they are building a SuperMoto Track and here is the reply. WOOT!

Hi,

Yes, it is true, it will not be ready until after Thanksgiving sometime, I dont really have a date set yet, but the plans are drawn and we are starting to clear the back woods.

Thanks,

Gina

Thanks, I've called a couple of tarders one in San Marcos and one in San Antonio. We'll see what we can get going.

I thought that about flat track, too, until a friend busted his leg in a dozen places. But, I ain't worried about the danger, just being able to make a sprint without running out of steam. I ain't got the fitness I had as a young rider and don't like working out.

WAY COOL, keep me informed! I can get some riders there from TMGP and maybe CMRA with a mention on those boards! There seemed to be huge interest in it with CMRA a few years back. They have a couple of motard classes that get a lot of participation. Road racing motards is a special kind of fun!

In fact, I think I'll post this on the TMGP and CMRA board and see if anyone knows anything.

Re: Motard riding fools in the greater Austin area?

Nice. Where do you flat track at and do you think a Motard with the right tires could be used on a flat track? It would help with backing it in I would think. Less Fear if that's possible.

And how did someone break his or her leg in so many places? Hit something bigger than them, that didn't move?

Well, Brad had the bike bounce out and back on him and he said the foot peg caught his left leg and snapped it and he went down and busted it up some more. OUCH

We raced this summer in Huffman and Baytown. Here are a couple of links. They race up near Waco, have a VDTRA national up there about every year.

Yeah, if you have a well set up motard, take the front brake off, install road racing rain tires, and go tear it up in the 505 amateur class (assuming a 450 mxer) I think there is an open amateur, too. I race a 150cc XR100 stroker, Frank Nye motor, that I bought out of California. It was actually intended for the SuperTT series out there and the guy's plans changed. It does well on the flat track, though, in the "mad dawg" class. Mad Dawg and 505 pro are the only two money classes and they pay 100 percent pay out.

Thanks for the links. I'll check them out.

The SuperTT Series at Grangé? I love that Motard track. Cheap too.

You got a deal. I got a grip on the asphalt stuff. What I need would be lessons on riding sideways. Or slideways. Especially at speed.

So if I get some 17 inch rain tires for my 4fidy can I just show up and get some track time?

Piece a cake, 'specially on a tard with a GOOD front brake.

Yep, and take the front brake caliper off the bike, don't need no front brake. You'll be "backin' it in".. The suspension settings are really close to road race, so a bike set up for asphalt is ideal. If you haven't, jack up the springs to give about 30mm total sag. That'll help.

I have a friend that runs "Metric Motorcycles", well his wife is "lil squid" (Yuliya) that posts here now and then, Andy Marcer. If you want details of set up, talk to him. He's got a CRF450 tard and this is what he did for dirt track. He's a dirt track addic I think, now. Andy knows suspension set up.
