Austin/New Orleans/Austin - Iron Butt Run - April 21st

A few members of the Austin Motorcycle Riders Group and I are planning an Iron Butt run from Austin to New Orleans and back in less than 24 hours. For those of you not familiar with the Iron Butt Assoc. they recognize riders that ride 1000 miles in less than 24 hours as well as several other types of long distance runs.

http://www.ironbutt.com/about/default.cfm

We are planning on leaving around 4 AM so that we can hit New Orleans, have time for a bit of a rest and lunch and head back in time for a late dinner. This will be a "by-the-book" run, meaning no speeding or hot dogging and all miles will be documented by receipts and pictures. The IBA has pretty strict rules to qualify for their runs. All receipts must be copied and mailed as well as a start point witness among other things. If this sounds like something you might be interested in feel free to read up on the rules for the SaddleSore 1000 and let me know you wanna go.

I drove Conroe to Orlando and back in 2 days time a few days ago, talk about being wiped out After 10 hours solid on road i was done and had to take a nap. Good luck and be careful, NO eastside is a virtual ghosttown at night, no lights on in many houses there at night and many streetlights still out there. Spooky....

Holding out for one of those 90 day layoff gigs are ya? The trick is timing re-entry to the job market with desire/need. Hard to get that part to coincide, unless you are a consultant, then you have it down to an art.

Actually, I'm holding out for A job. I was recently laid off so steadily seeking a job and lack of funds might interfere with being able to enjoy a 1000mile/24hour ride.

I might want to join y'all but I also might make a couple of suggestions

1) If leaving at 4am is a given then I would not plan to spend any extra time in NO as most I-Butts take at least 15 hours and most of the ones my friends have been on take 18-20 hrs. Its pretty hard to average better tha 60 MPH over the whole ride and that only gets you to 16+ hours.

2) Might think about heading out west instead of east. That way you are heading away from both the rising sun in the morning and setting sun in the evening. It also means not having to deal with riding thru Houston and its traffic. BTW: Van Horn is just about 500 miles west of Austin.

Just a thought. I am insterested so let me know the particulars

Re: Austin/New Orleans/Austin - Iron Butt Run - April 21st

I am thinking about doing the San Antonio to El Paso Iron Butt Saddle Sore 1000 on May 5, a fully sanctioned Iron Butt ride. Must register by April 21.

http://www.mctourer.com/rides/2007/S...anAntonio.html

That is if I get my bike back together by then:

http://www.vtxoa.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=182130

Anyway it might be a good alternative to New Orleans with a lot less chance of rain and better orientation to the sun as Andy pointed out above. And most importantly once you get about 50 miles west of San Antonio the posted speed limit is 80 MPH!

Check it out!

Re: Austin/New Orleans/Austin - Iron Butt Run - April 21st

Man, that stinks. I would be interested in both of those rides except I'm working every Saturday at least through mid May. Oh well, there'll be others.

I agree about not riding into the sun both ways. I just did almost 800 miles around SE Texas and faced the sun both ways. Earlier in the morning I was fresh enough that it didn't really bother me that badly. The sun wasn't a problem between 10:00 and 5:30 but it was a little frustrating from 5:30 until it went below the horizon.
