The Quest for Chili.... Big Bend in November

NOVEMBER 1ST THOUGH NOVEMBER 6TH

Most of you that have ever ridden with me for any amount of time knows that I am torn between my true love of motorcycles, and my true love of good food. So in keeping with that tradition, I'm taking my wife out to Big Bend for the Terlingua Chili Cook Off during the first weekend in November.

As it stands right now I don't have many details of the trip other than we'll be leaving the DFW area on Thursday the 1st of November, and coming home on Tuesday the 6th. I think we'll be camping at B.B.N.P., but as of right now I don't know which campground. I really liked the Rio Grande site last year so it might just be the same one. Oh yeah, and the Chili finals are on Saturday, I know that much. But other than that, it's completely up in the air.

I know this question will be asked, is it a dual sport trip or a street trip and all I can say is yes, no, maybe. I would really like to take the Strom off into the primitive trails in Big Bend, but I know Melanie doesn't want her little SV anywhere near gravel for darn good reason. They call them Continental "Road" Attacks, not "Gravel" Attacks. Her bike and tires just aren't meant for it. So yes, there will be some bikes doing gravel and Jeep trails, and there will be some bikes doing all pavement.

Anyway, it's a long way away, but people knew about it already started asking me about the details so here they are.

Excellant! It is on my calendar and for this one I will probably take the tent, but still eat out. My camp cookin' just isn't all that healthy.

The Wing makes this an "all pavement" trip for me.

Re: The Quest for Chili.... Big Bend in November

I have never been to Big Bend. I will probably need to hotel up since I don't have the required camping equipment. Is Marathon the best place? Any suggestions would be helpful. I figure I better make reservations early with the event in Terlingua going on.

I have not. But I've had friends go and they swear that it is one of the coolest things to ever go see. So I guess it's just a good excuse to go riding.

For those that don't want to camp, Big Bend National Park has a Lodge next to the Chisos Basin. They have fairly decent rooms from what I've been told. They can be reached at (432) 477-2291. Now, that is in the National Park, but it is still over 25 miles away from the Rio Grande camping area. I just really want to camp in that area because at night up in the Basin it will get 10 to 15 degrees colder that down by the river. Other than the Chisos Lodge, the closest place for hotel/motels will be in Study Butte or Terlingua.

For camping, they do have a group camping area that is $30 a night. I'm going to call tomorrow and see if it's available. Plus I need to see how many people/vehicles that it will hold.

Joyce, yes, I will be bringing the bikes up on a trailer, and will have room for the grill, and quite a bit of camp cookery along with all my tools.

Yes, there is a good place to get pie in Terlingua!!!

Ummmmm.... I can smell the charcoal now.
Can hardly wait till November.
I'm kind of looking forward to camping. We will have to accumulating camping gear again (well at least a tent since our's got blown away during a hurricane about 4 years ago).

We might get a tent, but I can certainly fit two air beds in a 6x12 trailer. Couple of lawn chairs, a cooler, and we're set!

Our last tent was a great one (as in REAL big). It stood for months on our property in Yoakum while we built the house - and that's literally "built the house". But one of the passing hurricanes sent some big bad wolf winds to blow the tent down (and a bunch of other stuff too).

At the time I thought I had enough "camping" to last a lifetime, but something about Big Bend says CAMPING. Besides, the hotels ain't much and they're REAL expensive.

If my September trip falls through, I'll be there. Somehow......
Camping gear is all set and thoroughly tested, ready and raring to go.

Was the original message just today?! Anyway, after perusing several calendars that I found in my pocket, it looks like I'd like to go too. If I may. Lemme know...

Thanks,
Jeff
