Garmin GPS Good Deal

If you have been looking for a GPS and didn't want to invest $400-600 well then check this out. You can buy a Garmin 2610 refurbished for $209 at Getfeetwet.com, several other large internet dealers are also selling them. These units are not refurbished, they are new in the box, and everyone who has received one from what I've seen posted on AdventureRider says the same thing, new. I received mine Wednesday and it works perfect, the unit comes with a 1year Garmin factory warranty and you will be the first owner when you regisiter it with Garmin. It comes with City Navagator v7, you will be able to get the latest virson, City Navagator 2008 free after you regisiter the new unit with Garmin. This unit is waterproof and very much shockproof, ie., great for motorcycles. It comes with everything you will need for the car, it even has a remote control, I ordered the Garmin motorcycle mounting kit #010-10495-00 from the same place I got the unit for $38. The Compact Flash card that the unit comes with is 128mb, that will take you along way in the USA. If you were to load the US and Canada (City Navagator CD) it is only 1.4gb's, I ordered a 2.0 Compact Flash card on line for $32 including shipping. Check the websites below to find out more.

Check this review the Garmin 2610 when it first came out

Re: Garmin GPS Good Deal

I got a refurb about 3 months ago and love it. Mounting and wiring kit from Cycoactive (http://www.cycoactive.com/gps/gps2610.htm) for another $60 and I'm set.

Oh, and FWIW, the units are refurbs at GetFeetWet... not that I think it matters.

Absolutely nothing. It comes with the CityNavigator disks which will have FM and County roads on there, you just need to load them to your memory card. The unit comes w/ a 32mb (?) CF card, which is enough to store TX. You can upgrade to the 2008 map set for free through Garmin, but I don't know how much that would affect smaller, secondary roads as much as it does the POIs.

Re: Garmin GPS Good Deal

re free map upgrades, I understand Garmin is moving away from that policy, citing increased cost from the makers of the maps. The last upgrade I bought, I could only load it on one unit, and I have 2 units. I called and complained, and they basically said TS. Ouch.

Yeah, I've heard the same things, I haven't actually spoken with anyone at Garmin about future upgrades. But, if you buy a factory refurb, from a licensed dealer, like GetFeetWet or Edge, you just go online and order up a new CD. Once you get it, enter the serial numbers it asks for and it gives you an unlock code.

I think the idea is, because these are being sold as "new", with warantee, you're entitled to the most recent software, despite the fact that the unit was orignially shipped with older software.

I think what they are getting away from is a map product supporting more than one unit. Which means that you need to have a copy of City Navigator for each unit that you own - I don't like that but I am sure they had abuse of some kind. I would like to be able to use one map product with all the units that I have registered (moot point for me since I only have one unit but this 2610 deal is tempting...).

Re: Garmin GPS Good Deal

2610 is a good unit. I got a referb awhile back when they were $350-400. I use it on my motorcycle, personal, and work car. I'm happy with it.

Re: Garmin GPS Good Deal

Garmin's warranty is like most warranties, you get it for that unit, you want it like computer software CD's where you can just put the CD programs in another PC. I feel like they are holding up their end of the deal by giving you free upgrades for the unit you purchased. I'm happy with that.

Someone asked about back county roads, yes they will show-up when you zoom in, I just took the E. Texas mud bath two weeks ago and they all there.

Squeaky, now you made me feel bad, I'm out $20 on purchase of my 2610. Maybe on the next DS ride you could buy my lunch that would help some, ok two lunches.

Re: Garmin GPS Good Deal

You people cost me too much money. When I purchased the FJR the previous owner gave me his hardwire kit and Ram mount for a Garmin 26XX GPS. I already had a quest but I wanted a bigger screen and quicker redraw plus ability to load entire US. So all I had to buy was the 2610. I just ordered it tonight.

Now I will have the 2610 and the quest. I will keep the quest for now and use it on the dirt bike and atv since it has a battery and does not need to be hard wired.

That's the only reason I haven't gotten the 2610. I like that I can look for stuff and route while I'm still indoors and it's running off the battery instead of waiting until I'm outside gearing up and folks are waiting on me, plus I don't have a battery on the XR to wire anything to.

Re: Garmin GPS Good Deal

I had a 2610 and didn't like it for DS stuff because it didn't do tracks well. It was great on the street bike and in the car.
