I don't know the story on this particular retired courthouse, but I do know that many of the older wooden courthouses in Texas met their demise in flame. Seems a douse of kerosene and a bit o'spark was a remarkably popular and effective way of deleting records and evidence - or simply delivering revenge for an unpopular ruling.

Below is a pic of the old jail next door. Note the prickly pear cactus growing out of the window.

Always like to find (for my training classes) those oldie buildings tied together with tie rods. Notice the "S" plates.

Also one reason some of the old jails went up in flames, was perhaps because mobs decided to deal with prisoners in their own way, yikes!

I've wondered about the meaning of the "S" symbols on many of the old jails. I only remember seeing them on jails - not courthouses. Are they some type of symbol for justice? Scale hooks perhaps? My google-fu has not produced any results.

Well there might be some meaning in some local area? But typically, stars, the S, or even straight sections of iron are seen in older ordinary construction buildings. These are often called "Main street USA" structures in the Fire Service. As these buildings lose integrity they often get shored up with tie-rods that are out of site perhaps, except where they terminate outside and have to be secured.

Re: Where am I? (Can you place this picture...?)

Thanks Jerry. Never been there myself, but from your hint about the distance I figured it had to be in The Rio Grande Valley. So I consulted TexasCourtHouses.com for retired courthouses in that area.

I was on my way home from my trip out west when out or the corner of my eye, I spotted this sign. My first thought, was that I must have misread it. Surely it did not say what I thought it said, it must have just been a figment of my imagination. One would NEVER name there place that, would they? I went a few more miles down the road and then decided I had to go back to make sure. Sure ‘nuf it said what I thought it said.

You know you are back in Texas when you come upon a sign like this.

Where am I (current hwy and nearby town please).

Re: Where am I? (Can you place this picture...?)

I am a little thin on pictures in the state, so this one may be a little obscure unless you have stayed there.
Just the town name is OK.

night

Terlingua/Study Butte???

Edit: Nope that can't be right. Too many trees. Nevermind. I don't know. At first it looked like Longhorn Ranch Motel.

Methinks the reason it looks familiar is that you may have stayed there on your way to Terlingua...

HINT: If one were to consume a large steak (say a 72oz steak for free), you might be glad that his motel in on the property so you can go sleep it off.
