Smile New Rockwall resident

Hey guys I am moving from Houma, LA (southwest of New Orleans) to Rockwall in the next few weeks.

I'm coming up that way 06/06/08 thru 06/15/08 for some job interviews at several hospitals (Methodist, Baylor, etc.) and my wife and I should be there for good by the end of the month.

The bad news is my 2007 BMW R1200GS is sold and the buyer should be here Thursday for pickup. I decided until I learn the area I shouldn't be riding around Dallas asking the cars to hit me.

So I will be lurking on here from time to time and soon enough will be back on a bike. I am think of either a new KLR or the BMW F800GS (once they have the bugs worked out 2010 model?). I might even pick up a little cheap used bike to play around on in the meantime.

So anybody from that area give me a shout and I will let you know once I get another one. I am also on ADVrider with the same screen name.

Here is a pic of my current, sold , bike.

HI & Jason!

Gotta ask: WHY did you sell that awesome bike?!? It SO ROCKS!! I wanted that bike at one time, but it was WAY too tall & I didn't see myself riding much dirt to justify having a GS. I have the 800ST & really love it, but as a newbie rider I'm still working on getting my "riding legs"! Anyway...good luck with the job interviews, & WELCOME TO TEXAS!!

Re: New Rockwall resident

Thanks guys.

Yeah I am sad to see her go but I got back almost every penny I put into her so I guess it isn't too bad.

For the riding, miles and ability, I kinda felt like it was buying a Ferrari to drive to work. I will never have the skills to ride the beast like she deserves.

I really think the F800GS will be more my speed in a few years. Until then, once I get some sense of Dallas, I will look for a KLR or something.

The issue is always the same: the government or the market. There is no third solution. - Ludwig von Mises

Where politicians flourish, long history has harshly taught us, people and their liberty wither. Where the state is god and the "public interest" worshipped, individual man will be found bleeding upon the altar. - Karl Hess

I heartily accept the motto, “That government is best which governs least.”… Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe—”That government is best which governs not at all”; and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have. — Henry David Thoreau, 1849

Human reason must justify what the human will has chosen, even at the cost of falsifying reality. - Stephen Westerholm

But the myth of the rule of law does more than render the people submissive to state authority; it also turns them into the state's accomplices in the exercise of its power. For people who would ordinarily consider it a great evil to deprive individuals of their rights or oppress politically powerless minority groups will respond with patriotic fervor when these same actions are described as upholding the rule of law. - John Hasnas

Re: New Rockwall resident

Well, not so sure when/if I'll be riding again.

My best friend, best man in my wedding 8 years ago who I still see daily to workout at the gym and talk, was killed on his bike.

It happened 06/05/08 around 10pm, a single vehicle accident. He went off the road in a curve and hit a telephone pole. He was killed instantly. From walking the scene myself, several times, I believe speed was a factor. He was riding a Honda CBR600F4.

I know alot depends on your riding style and abilities but I still don't see myself getting back on one. Life is too important and I want to make as many memories with my loved ones as possible.

I will look up some of you local riders, even if just to get some food and say hello.

As far as location we are not settled on Rockwall yet, Plano is also on this list.

Any other areas to suggest?

Jason,
Welcome to Texas and to this site. Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend.

There are some cool residential areas of town that often get overlooked because of the allure of the spiffy/clean/newly developed suburbs. I will list a couple that are not considered suburbs. These are areas that were built out in the 30s, 40s and 50s. They are nice mature neighborhoods with typically well built homes. Depending on your situation they may or may not meet your needs.
Kressler Park is near Methodist Hospital
Lakewood is near Big Baylor
Lake Highlands is near Presby Dallas and Medical City
Casa Linda is near Doctors Hospital at White Rock Lake not far from Big Baylor and Dallas Presby
Bluffview is located off Lovers Lane and is near the Hospital District of UT Southwestern, Parkland, Childrens, St Paul and such.

Good luck with your move and let us know if you need any help.
