Any Austin TWT's riding May 26-29?

I will be in Austin May 26th through 29th and was wondering if any Austin TWTers would be doing a road ride one of those four days and would like some company. Since I will be on vacation I am open for just about any length day road ride. No time constraints.

MCryder, r11s, ninjette and I will be riding those dates. we'll leave Sheridan on the 26th and arrive in Yellowstone NP that evening. On the 29th we'll be in Glenwood Springs, CO.

Re: Any Austin TWT's riding May 26-29?

Those are work days for me, so beyond commuting not much riding. However, there is a bike night at Ming's Cafe every Wednesday in Austin. Friendly bunch of riders gather from 7pm-9pm, and the food is great.

Ming's is on Guadelupe, just across from the UT campus. Just look for a bunch of motorcycles parked on the sidewalk, and the tat shop all in red next door is a good landmark.

David,

Thanks for the info on the bike night. I know where Ming's is. I just might make that but I also want to ride some of the better roads in or around Austin. Is there a source for best motorcycle road routes around Austin?

Several of us are meeting for lunch at Billys Burgers, Thurs 05/29 at 11:30. Corner of Burnet Rd. and Hancock.

Generally, where will you be bunking for this period? I might be able to squeeze in a day.

I am staying with my son all week. His apartment is on Red River about three blocks from the UT campus. If you want to do a ride that would be great but if not I understand. I would like to know what are the best routes to ride in and around Austin.

UT area is central so that should be good for lots of folks to bounce out. There's not a whole lot of choices headed up from the valley... I'd probably do the Falfurius, Alice, George West, Kenedy, Nixon, Luling route just to get here and get that part over. Maybe a stop in Luling/Lockhart for BBQ.

Actually I am going to Kerrville Saturday to ride with some friends on Sunday, then to San Marcos to do a track day at Harris Hill Monday, then to my son's for the rest of the week.

Re: Any Austin TWT's riding May 26-29?

I am looking for some street twisties tomorrow. I've got a 250cc dual sport in supermoto mode right now and I'd like to see how much dust I can clear off the edge of the tires.

I could keep up in turns just really really long straights I will fall behind as I don't like to WOT at 9k rpm for more than 10 minutes or so.

You need to take that thing out to Harris Hill for some real fun! I think the mileage and open road I was considering for tomorrow might be a little much on a 250 DS but you are welcome to give it a try. Your call.

Re: Any Austin TWT's riding May 26-29?

Wed (05/27) is shaping up. This is what we've got penciled in.

Meet at the Starbucks at Wm. Cannon/MOPAC South about 8:30am. Head down to Wimberly, then up to Blanco and a stop at Luckenbach and maybe an early lunch in Fredericksberg. (Fredericksberg Brewery???) From there, North on 16 to the West side of the Willow City Loop, run the loop, stop at Harry's (never done that) then Sandy, Johnson City, Dripping and back to Austin. Maybe 200 +/- miles total.

Anyone else want to go?

Want too? Or able? I can't answer yes to both unfortunately. I was out in Luckenbach on Saturday. Basically went out the way you are planning. Nice and green out there. Have fun.

Re: Any Austin TWT's riding May 26-29?

Man..... what a day!

I met Randy (RTL) about 8:15am this morning under darkening skies at the Willie Cannon/MOPAC Starbucks. He was in Austin for the week up from the Valley. Weather radar showed a rain band out about Fredericksberg headed East and another little one SW of Austin. I figured we were going to get wet at some point but it didn't appear it would be long.

After some conversation about what we were going to do, the skies opened up. A tremendous downpour came with lots of lightning while we sipped and chatted. After a bit of watching it rain, we looked at the radar again and the mess was right on top of us. I figured within another hour, it'd be gone. Sure enough, the rain let off, the cloud deck lifted and blue sky was seen to the West. That's about all we needed!

About 9:50 we headed out Camp Ben McCullough road, past the Salt Lick and over to Driftwood. From there, we stayed on 150 and made our way into Wimberley. The skies were still quite dark to the South of us, but North and Northwest was blue, blue and more blue. The temps were cool and the humidity low.

From Wimberley, we headed over to Blanco and then out 1888 to Luckenbach. A quick stop there to check messages and we were off to Fredericksberg for lunch. Pulling into F-Berg, we were treated to "rockstar" parking right in front of the Fredericksberg Brewery. A few buckets of tea and lunch and we off again.

Heading up Hwy 16 North out of F-Berg we ran the 16 or so miles to the Willow City Loop turnoff. It's about 6 miles past the FM1323 Willow City turn. We ran "the loop" at a very relaxed pace to take in all the sights and greenery. That sure is a nice part of the Hill Country. We popped out on the East side next to Harry's on The Loop and continued on to Sandy and then South to Johnson City.

Clearing Johnson City, we deadheaded back 290 through Dripping Springs, back to Willie Cannon and fueled just about where we started, this time under that same blue sky and dry air.

Good friendships, good riding and good weather. What a way to spend a day!

Thanks for leading me on a great ride! The weather turned far more cooperative than I thought it would. I thoroughly enjoyed it and needed the stress relief. Thanks again Scott!

Thinking back on the ride one thing struck me. Of all the times I've done it that was the least amount of traffic I have ever encountered on the Willow City Loop. What did we see two maybe three cars and no motorcycles or bicycles?

I remember a SUV turning into a drive and a red pickup. Other than that, the road was ours.

Re: Any Austin TWT's riding May 26-29?

Yup, that was me alright! I had just left Cycle Gear on Burnet and was headed to Bicycle Sport Shop South on Lamar to pick-up my packet for tomorrows Real Ale ride. Kind of laying low and resting up for that today.
It is going to be a hot hilly ride. Take care!
