Re: WhooHoo NASCAR's back
I'm running out of reasons to watch. All the old timers other than Mark Martin are stepping by the wayside and the young snot-nosed kids are coming up through the ranks. I couldn't name 25% of the drivers any more.

NASCAR tickets are expensive...
...you can get the same effect by watching a bag of these being flushed down the commode:
![]() Just kidding. Like ice hockey, NASCAR races are by far better live and in person than by TV. My first was The Brickyard at Indianapolis. The sound was almost destructive

Re: NASCAR tickets are expensive...
Heh... me too. Brickyard in 1998. We were between turns 1 - 2 and got to see Dale Sr take the air off of Kenny Irwin and put him into the wall right in front of us.
Sad for us because we were there as guests of Texaco and had shared beers with Kenny on Friday night.

Re: WhooHoo NASCAR's back
Geeeeeeez, already? How long is the NASCAR off-season these days, like two weeks or something?
![]() Admittedly, I'm one of the guys you mention who just doesn't get it. I do admire NASCAR's moonshining roots, but it has become so far removed from its past as to bear no meaningful resemblance in my view. Anyhow, enjoy the season. Let me know when the road race at Sears Point happens; I might be inclined to watch at least that one just for the comedic aspect alone. ![]()

Re: WhooHoo NASCAR's back
Like Tricepilot said, until you experience it in person it's likely that you will never "get it". Television just cannot convey the intensity of the racing that you feel when you are there in person.

Re: WhooHoo NASCAR's back
Well I agree with some of the hate..
1) How many real cars today run a V8? 2) Of those how many are actually in NASCAR? 3) Are there any real cars today useing a carb set up? My biggest gripe is the use of retrictor plates, and makeing the cars all the same. Where's the incentive for manufactures to be inovative? As soon as one team/manufacturer has an advatage NASCAR implements rules to outlaw that said advantage. They complain about the "speed" of the cars and what they can do to slow them down and make them safer. How about making them like real cars that you see everyday? Step into the real world and the 21st cebtury, run V6s with fuel injection on 87 octane fuel! Have them run a stock blocks and stock heads. Sure the chasis has to be a race set up for safety, but go back to the manufactures orginal body style with very limited mods. Lets get back to some real brand recognition, win on Sunday sell on Monday type of stuff. With that said...........again the interest for me is knowing the players, teams etc. I also see how hard it is to win with all the cars being so close to being alike. Eveything has to go your way on that day, that week, that season to snatch the ring.

Re: WhooHoo NASCAR's back
Well, just to be clear, I don't hate it at all. I just don't have much interest. But I agree with you bigtime on the over-parity issue. Let's get rid of all that generic "car of tomorrow" kit and put some Dodge Challengers and G8s and such out there on the track. That would be infinitely more enthralling.

Re: WhooHoo NASCAR's back
As I mentioned, I hated hockey on TV too. There was a time when we were living in Colorado Springs, and my wife, an AF Academy grad, wanted to drag me (kicking and screaming) to a USAFA hockey game. When broadcast, I'd rather have someone stick pins in my fingertips than watch TV hockey. So I went to "be nice". Well, after five minutes live I was into it! Any just why, I can't explain.
Live NASCAR races are a hoot, not just for the impact of the senses, but the crowd at a NASCAR race has to be seen (and sat among) to be believed. Good Ol' Boys and Girls, drunker than Cooter Brown, some with their favorite driver's numbers shaved, SHAVED, into their back hair. I'm not kidding. Indy lets fans bring their own coolers into the track too - and I mean the stands, not just the infield. When the green flag drops, 1/2 the crowd probably couldn't care who wins. There's a lot of backslapping, high-fiving, and a complete stranger will pass you a beer is you ask. The sound of cars packing it into the guarrail is much better live. And if you see a wreck right in front of you, your nervous system rewires itself and causes a drug-like reaction which you have to satisfy again and again. I think a lot of fans come to see the wrecks as much as to see who wins. Some people get paid millions to drive in circles. What a life ![]() |

Re: WhooHoo NASCAR's back
I think the COT is the the problem, it is noting but a template car with different stickers. It was ll done in the name of parity because everyone had a common start point...how well has that worked? Jimmy Johnson has won 4 straight titles.

There's plenty of reasons to love NASCAR. My favorite driver is Ricky Bobby

Re: WhooHoo NASCAR's back
Local short track is fun stuff, makes your ears bleed, open headers, front brakes glowing orange in the evening, smell of race fuel, brake dust and burnt rubber.

I don't think I will ever get it. I have been to 4 races now, all at TMS, and nearly fell asleep during every race. But how can you possibly fall asleep when the cars are so loud? I dunno, but I have seen the trucks twice, Nationwide series once, and IRL another time, and had to leave early because I was just ready to go to bed. Maybe I'm just a big wimp, but on a night nice enough to be racing cars I would rather be out on my bike!

Re: WhooHoo NASCAR's back
I miss San Antonio Raceway so my only short track is a dirt track in Pleasanton or the 1/8 mile oval in Kyle. I much prefer seeing local short track races than NASCAR, but the blood still pumps when its 3 wide at Daytona and 'Dega.

Have you checked out the new nationwide cars that will be racing this year? Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger are the two entries for those manufacturers. Chevy and toyota are running Impala and camry. Chevy did not want field a camaro. You can find some pics of the new nationwide cars at jayski.com
