Thumbs up Second Annual Ouray, CO DS Ride

I know it's early, but... If we don't start planning now it won't happen!!!

When: Aug. 22nd - Sept. 1st 2011
If you are interested in going to beautiful Ouray,Colorado, post up!

We went in July 2009 and Aug. 2010 and had an absolutely GREAT time! This is some of the best DS riding in Colorado and you will not be disappointed!!! There are 13,000 ft. plus mountain passes and the most gorgeous scenery you can imagine!! From Ouray there are countless jeep trails that offer everything from easy to difficult terrain, basically something for everybody!

We will trailer the bikes and stay overnight in New Mexico on Monday the 22nd then continue to Ouray arriving mid afternoon Tuesday the 23th. We will be able to get in 6 full days of riding before leaving Tuesday the 30th to return home.

In addition to the DS riding, there is some awesome street riding!!!! I am seriously considering taking my FJR for some canyon carving, OK for me it will be more like canyon creeping!!

Please post up if you are interested in going!!

repeat as required!!!

Look who's going!!
I need info on the people in RED, please send me a PM with your information...

Re: Second Annual Ouray, CO DS Ride

Sounds awesome; we took the KLR and the Versys up late in September. One thing, since y'all went in 09 and 10, and this is 2011, might one think of it as the THIRD annual trip? Y'all have fun!

Re: Second Annual Ouray, CO DS Ride

Well technically it is the third... but last year was the first "group" trip, it was just a simple post that turned into 15 riders in Colorado!!!!

Re: Second Annual Ouray, CO DS Ride

Last year was just down right awesome! One of those rare experiences I can reflect back on and still feel the rush and excitement almost like being there. (Think about facing the steps going down Black Bear towards Telluride and see if your fingers don't start twitching and leg, back and shoulder muscles begin involuntarily tightening). This is, by the way, a great technique to help make it through all those ridiculously boring business meetings back in the world.

Folks, this is an extreme dual sport vacation. Seven days of riding in country that'll amaze and challenge anyone. GHT put this together last year and did a first rate job of it. You can ride lush valleys beside mountain streams or tackle scenic rocky moonscapes at altitudes where the sky begins to darken. You can count on it being an experience that you will never, ever forget.

Re: Second Annual Ouray, CO DS Ride

I have jeeped blackbear pass...not sure I want to take one of my pig pigs on that one... I rode my VStrom from Creed to Silverton via Stoney pass and then across Engineer to Lake city...I would not do it again witha Strom...My GSA with TKCs yeah...Trying to get me a smaller beater bike for those kind of rides...I tend to ride like a fool...My last offroad foray resulted in $5K damages to my GSA...just got it all fixed back. I use to work for a cattle ranch near Stoner which is back toward Delores from Telluride. I rode pretty much all those roads at one point or another. Back in the 80s there was an old saloon in the "ghostown" of Dunton...use to keep the beer cold in trough of snow melt...It was like stepping back in time...Last time I was there, somebody had bought the whole town and fenced it off I will watch this and see what develops...I know my wife will not let me go alone...she would follow in her Rubicon

I would like to join but need to see what my work schedule is like. What is the weather like in Aug? Warmer enough to tent it? Any good locations near by?

Re: Second Annual Ouray, CO DS Ride

The weather last year was perfect!!! Warm in the valley, cool to cold on the mountain passes (we got into a small sleet storm on top of Emogene), as far as camping goes, there are numerous campgrounds in Ouray and I'm sure that some of the guys that camped last year can be more specific and will chime in with their suggestions. Should I add you to the list?

Re: Second Annual Ouray, CO DS Ride

So, count me in. Chuck and I are planning to start early from Colorado Springs and dual sport it over, we may not be there for the entire time but hope to spend a couple days.

By the way George ... did you ever get those dual sport tires for the FJR or are you planning on having something else there by this summer

Colorado in August and early September is about as good as it gets for camping, even in the higher elevations. But with that said, there are freak snow storms and cold snaps that can't be anticipated. I have woke up in Colorado in August at about 9000ft, when sleeping out in just a sleeping bag, with about three inches of snow on me. But that was about 30 years ago, long before global warming.

The KLR is getting long in the legs... I wonder if I could work a KTM 450 by then

It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a ‘dismal science.' Re: Second Annual Ouray, CO DS Ride

@ DwayneInfo this is where we stayed last year and it worked out great!

http://timberridgelodgeouray.net/

It is right next to the only gas station in town and there is ample parking for trailers and bikes. There is a campground that adjoins this property. The owner is from Texas and is very motorcycle friendly!

We stayed here last year in September and the lows at night were in the mid to high 30's. It's free and about 5 miles south of Silverton at slightly over 10,000'. Several outhouse type toilets but no running water or showers. It is a national forest campground.
