Riding in the heat - cool the neck!

Check out this article about new insights into tolerating heat effectively...bottom line is:

"The experiments in question began several years ago, when researchers at Roehampton University in London found that healthy young men could cover significantly more distance during a timed run on treadmills in a hot laboratory if they supplemented their workout gear with an ice-cold strap-on neck collar. The collar, lined with flexible artificial-ice packs, noticeably lowered the skin temperature on the men’s necks"

How do you accomplish this? I guess a cooling collar. like this.

I fill a bandana diagonally with ice cubes, roll it up, and wrap it around my neck. If I use quite a bit of ice (a McDonald's 32 oz cup full) it will still have some ice left after 2 hours in 100* heat.
BTW-I special order 27" bandanas.

I use one of these.

Joe Rocket used to sell them with their logo to go with their mesh Ballistic jackets.

The article indicates that it is basically fooling the brain into thinking the body is cooler than it really is; this is dangerous if your body core temp gets into unsafe territory without you realizing it.

That said, I can't think of much that feels better riding on a hot day than a cold wrap around the neck.

I've used a cool wrap from Academy for years at work back in my plant days. Been about 10 years since I used it but it was well worth the couple dollars I spent on it.

The neck wrap in conjunction with a moist cooling riding vest is the cat's meow.

Re: Riding in the heat - cool the neck!

I won a phase change vest in a magazine sweepstakes and wore it for the first time last week. It keeps your abdomen cool, providing secondary cooling to where ever your blood gets pumped.

The popsicles freeze in about 20 minutes at around 60 degrees and last 2 - 4 hours. I have a collapsible cooler I keep the vest in - with a block of blue ice - stuck in my trunk, when I start out on a day-ride. After lunch, I can pull it out and it's still frozen and works great.

A cammelback filled with ice does wonders. You have a constant sip of icewater.

We also drench ourselves with water (inside the riding jacket) every fuel stop. Gives about 1/2 hour of air conditioning.

We road back to Houston from Arkansas recently in 105 degree heat. We felt it, but survived OK.

Re: Riding in the heat - cool the neck!

I've used a neck wrap for years, but rather than buying a commercial one I just cut a lenght of artificial chamois the proper width and length to wrap around my neck a couple of times.

This does more than just "fool" the brain. It actually cools the blood going through the carotid, which is carried through to the brain and body. I'd be careful about overdoing it though. I'm not sure using ice is a good idea.

Use dry ice instead of blue ice next time and people will think you have a steam powered motorcycle

After some discussion with the owner I bought their twin pack/bag system. I'll be testing it on my long trip at the end of the month.

Re: Riding in the heat - cool the neck!

Well, I just ordered one of those Black Ice things. I have a few Coozies I use but they don't last long at highway speeds in 100+ weather. I was swapping them out every 40 miles. They are kinda like a chamos that you used to dry cars with.

That's a wonderful idea! I like the twisted way you think.

Any feedback on these? Will the Ultra Cooler store more than 1 collar? This would be necessary with 2-up riding.

Perhaps with CDC (Camilo), you guys could do a product review? Maybe even secure a group buy with the owner of the invention?

I hope it works out for you!

Re: Riding in the heat - cool the neck!

Got mine today and promptly put them in the freezer. Will give a review when I test them.

The issue that I'll have is when the wife and I are on a road trip and packed with overfilled bags, how we can also carry a bag of ice water for recharging.

Will test it this weekend mowing the grass.... I am starting to convince myself that Fred's recommendation will be great!
