Not time to change plans yet. Let's wait a week and then make the call.

If we don't go to Pie Town, then the whole thing of a pie run is not there.

As best as I can determine, this is the link to the fire that concerns us.

Once map opens, check the "Active fire Perimeters" box, then scroll left to see the main fire in Gila National Forest about 75 miles southwest of Pie Town

...of course I wouldn't mind it moving a little closer to somewhere in Colorado but I am still thinking about the trip to Pie Town as well.

Blues Player,

I think La Veta, just an hour past Raton Pass, NM/Colorado border would make a great place for an alternative pie run location. You can take Highway 12 to make it a scenic detour from IH-25 or just head up IH-25 and exit at Walsenburg and go west for a little bit.

La Veta is located at the base of the Colorado Rockies and is a good jumping off point for excellent day rides. It is also located near the Continental Divide dual-sport route.

Fire containment is improving. Not much yet, but better than being out of control.

Don't write Pie Town off just yet.

Whitewater-Baldy Complex Fire

UPDATE – June 1 – Morning Update
With the increased humidity levels, firefighters made significant progress on the northern and western fronts of the fire. Firefighters continue to improve structure protection in Mogollon, Willow Creek, and isolated ranches. Successful burnout operations resulted in hardened boundaries around subdivisions. Substantial progress was made on north and western flanks, which doubled the percentage of containment to 10%. Firefighters are scouting terrain along the southwestern and eastern flanks of the fire for opportunities to safely put in containment lines.

With a chance of thunderstorms and dry lightning over the Black Hills area, resources are on hand ready to respond to any new starts that may occur.

Re: TWT invasion of Pie Town New Mexico 6/16/2012

I have some property 30 mins from Pie Town and go that way 3-4 times per year.

So here are a few heads up on the area.

1. Within 5 mins of leaving Socorro only Verizon cell service will work. AT&T doesn't work out there.
2. Magdalena then Datil is your last gas unless you go beyond. Support the small guy in Datil and get gas so they can stay in business.
3. Don't speed coming out of Socorro or through Magdalena.
4. Watch out for Elk out there. They like to step out in the road. Oh and that time of year all the Elk and Deer will be having the babies so you might see one or two if you look.

Enjoy your trip and be sure to get a green chilli burger at the Owl or Buck Horn if you have time. They are both located at 380 where it meets 25 in San Antonio. They are world famous.

I strongly suggest everyone make an ice card or two. That way you can keep one on you and give one to Leon or someone in the event something happens. I will also be picking up a spot and my Dad will be listed as the primary (he does CERT for city of Dallas and is retired Army, so maybe I'll have better luck than Bob).

Bob, I've decided to hold off on CDR for when I get my more dirt oriented ride... have my eyes set on one of them Swedish gals.

Re: TWT invasion of Pie Town New Mexico 6/16/2012

I don't know if this site has been shared yet. Inciweb Constantly updated incident information. It's still a long way from Pie Town. Might me some smoke depending on wind direction. 20% contained but that is mostly on the south and southwest sectors. Contained means there is an established fire line, natural or man made, that the fire is not expected to jump over. We were there the day it "blew up" with the high winds. It was only 2000 acres the morning we started across NM. With the wind, visibility on IH25 was about 1-2 miles at the most. Not a cloud in the clear blue sky except for smoke. No filters on this pic either.
