Bastrop Summer Big Ride

All are welcome.

Saturday, June 23.

8am.

Bastrop Soccer fields.

Summer big ride.

There is a $4 fee to ride the park road. I will collect the cash from everyone at the meet so the entry into the park goes smoothly.

50/50 loop for a street/gravel warm up. It takes me 1hr, and I'm moving (edit: I know every corner and I might go way too fast). Add 5 min for each extra rider. These roads can be ridden on street tires, but you need to know what you are doing.

We should be done with the road portion about 10:00. Google says 46.1 miles and 2 hr 21 min. Pfft.

We will stop for gas and snacks for the first time. There will be no 12pm lunch break, so grab some peanuts and a banana, a gatorade or two and refill the camelbak with fresh, cool water.

Then we head to the trailhead and ride the Bastrop Trails proper. Knobbies start to help over here but are not absolutely required.

There is a little bit of everything. Most of the hard lines have easy lines next to them, but not all. You should make sure to look where you are going and pick your own line. There is plenty of time to be a hero later.

New riders should really consider whether to continue after the first lap is complete, as some may find it harder than they thought.

The first loop will be doable on any adventure bike (you are willing to drop).

The second and proceeding loops will be different and much harder. I won't take you over any logs on the first lap, but if you stick around you can bet that I will test you.

I drop my bike every time I ride, but that's just me. I wear good gear and know my limits. I also am willing to accept the consequences if I push it a little too far. I expect you to do the same.

I figure we will finish up around 2 and get home safe.

There will be some sort of after-ride mileage fest, but I will have to get home to momma. Rman is in charge of after-ride planning.

Any takers?

Re: Bastrop Summer Big Ride

Sounds good, I'm in.

Since we'll be finishing up around 2, how about a longer DS ride afterwards? Calling all local dirt roaders Rman, Meriden, JMZ, MotoTex, etc.

Re: Bastrop Summer Big Ride

Now that I've plated the DRZ I'm ready to go on one of these local rides.

However, on this date I've been invited along on a trip to Cloudcroft where we will be doing some air-conditioned trail riding at around 10,000 ft.

I'll catch ya next time. Y'all have fun!

Is there a (safe) place to park a truck/trailer?

Yes, at the soccer fields, near the corner of HWY 71 and HWY 95.

Where are you coming from? There are lots of ways to get there without hitting Hwy 71.

RollingJ,

DO you have a count yet. I may be able to make this one.

Not concerned about getting there, I am asking about the ride itself. Just do not want to be on a basic street ride, on in town/traffic much on an XR4. Thanks.

Re: Bastrop Summer Big Ride

How much 71?
If we go in at the Bastrop Park entrance there will be no highway, but we need to pay $4 each (or have a park pass) if there is an attendant. This is my preferred route.
Or we can ride about 3 miles down 71 to Harmon Road. This skips the attendant but also skips some nice twisty roads.

Last time I went (about a month ago) I informed attendant we were just driving through the park and she only charged us $2 each. But receipt she gave us was a normal day pass. Not sure if this is the norm or only my irresistible charm that qualified me for the discount, haha.

Re: Bastrop Summer Big Ride

I will be on my CRF450X unless my steering dampner is delayed on it's visit to a California Rehab facility, in which case I will rock the NX250.

The parks people are supposed to charge $2 a park, so if you ride through Bastrop and Buscher then it's $4 (still worth it).
