Talk me in or out of
The new wee-Strom Adventure.
I'm think of trading in my DR 650 and CRF 230 for a new Strom Adventure. The CRF is not being used (ie only gone through 1 tank of gas) and the DR lacks street ability for 220 miles commute. So, what are the pluses and minuses of the Wee-Strom Adventue? TIA

Re: Talk me in or out of
I'd never try to talk you out of a Strom - great bike. But from what I recall, I don't know that there's anything different between the regular Strom and the adventure model besides the included travel cases and maybe some paint. You might want to do a little aftermarket pricing to see whether it's cheaper to buy the Adventure model, or buy the standard Wee and outfit it yourself.

Any reason not to consider the F650GS twin? You are already in the ball park price-wise.

Nothing wrong with the BMW. I've been a Suzi fan/owner all my life and want to keep one in the stable. But the BWM is not out of the question. Just thinking about numbers of dealerships.

0% APR!!!! Go for it!!
The adventure adds at least the cases, engine bars, and adjustable windshield. I think there was something else it had, I will have to look for it but I think I have a magazine where they break it down and it is cheeper to buy the adventure for 1500 over the base model than upgrade the base one your self. I'm not very good at this, but here goes...
No. Don't. Stop.. Sorry, that's the best I can do. I have NO will power when it comes to buying new bikes, or used bikes, or camera equipment, or good cigars, or fine wine, or...

Re: Talk me in or out of
Head over to stromtrooper.com for tons of info about the new V-Strom. Some folks are having vibration issues with the OEM crash bars (but perhaps fixable with a rubber shim) and the side cases are on the large side. I'm really enjoying my orange one; much better on the highway than my DR and it doesn't give up much agility.
It's gonna come down to whether or not it is good enough on/off road for your riding interests. One of the BMWs, Triumphs, KTMs, and/or Yamaha Tenere might be better in some aspect that really matters to you, but to me the new Wee is a sweet ride.

Yeah, I'd forgotten those perks. Good point. And you'll want a better windshield - trust me. Go for it!

Re: Talk me in or out of
As a WEE owner the only issue is the lack of true off road ability compared to the DR. Yes you can do some light off road but nothing like what the DR/KLR can Handle. Yes the Wee is nice for the longer road trips and even does well 2 up on longer rides.

Re: Talk me in or out of
My DR has a Sargent seat, a small MRA windshield, and upgraded suspension. It is perfectly fine on hill country roads, but is not a comfortable tourer for long distances on highways and interstates. I got the Wee to fill that gap. The Wee does fine on the interstate for short periods stock. I sometimes notice a little buffeting at 80mph indicated with the stock shield (i'm 5'10"). For a multi-day out-of-state trip I'd want to add a better-than-stock windshield, fork brace, and a better seat (the OEM one is good by stock seat standards). So I think the on-road comfort increase is significant.
I can only speculate on the off-road comfort differences. I got the DR to do some Texas dual-sport riding, but to-date I haven't done it - partly for not having the time, and partly for lacking confidence because I don't have dirt experience. I would be comfortable on the Wee on maintained dirt roads with the occasional rut. On the DR I'd be willing to tackle jeep roads (albeit slowly at my skill level) and some mild up-hills and down-hills. I'd personally leave the rest to the 250s: mud, sand, aggressive single-track, ... I'm OK with the off-road limits of the Wee, but I'm primarily a street rider. If I could keep only one, it would be the Wee. It gives me enough dirt road capability (be sure and get a skid plate to protect the oil filter), and a more comfortable touring ride for multi-day trips. The DR is more agile for sure - which is a big part of its fun-factor - but the Wee is surprisingly good IMO for its larger size.

Re: Talk me in or out of
My neighbor had a DR650 and just bought the new 2012 Adventure Wee and loves it! I had an XR650L and upgraded to a super tenere. I don't regret it for a second. If you are lower on the dirt confidence and will mostly be doing maintained dirt road type riding the wee is absolutely capable of conquering those rides. The new Wee rides AWESOME and is very smooth. Both the Tenere and the Wee have allowed my neighbor and I to ride longer street trips but still be able to enjoy dirt and gravel.
It sounds like you do the same kind of riding we like to do, and we much prefer our new more street worthy bikes than the 650 thumpers for the riding we do. The adventure model is a pretty good deal with what you get from the factory. I really like the lip they added to the stock windshield, it noticeably deflects air in the direction you desire. |

Re: Talk me in or out of
I have the Tenere and really like it now, also think the wee is a nice bike.
I would buy a new used one, and add used aftermarket parts, like bars, guards, ect. I'm getting a taste for Linguini with clams and a white wine butter sauce. Maybe a fall run?? |

Re: Talk me in or out of
We all know that no bike is prefect. So other then the vibs at around 65 what other hiccups does the wee have? Any have to do items like the dohickey on the KLR?
