HELP..HELP!!!....PLEASE

Hi all,

My husband, Eric, who I'm logged in under is currently on a bike trip from Fort Worth Texas to Colorado with a couple of friends. He has a 2007 FJR1300 and is having some major clutch problems. He is asking me to locate a shop around Taos, NM to see if they have a clutch, non-automatic version. He stopped at a local Yamaha shop they found along the way, but they did not have any.

I'm reaching out to y'all for any assistance. Does anyone have friends, or a relative in the Taos area that they could stop by and he can change out the clutch? He can change out the clutch himself, just a matter of finding a place and the part. I know I have to try and locate the clutch first, but y'all were my first thought for any help.

Please let me know, and thanks so much in advance.

Shannon

Here's a link to names of the ten Yamaha dealers in NM. I'm trying to contact a guy in Taos.

Re: HELP..HELP!!!....PLEASE

Here's another idea. If he can't find a clutch at a dealer, buy one on the net and have it overnighted to a dealer or the motel. If there is a Napa store, they would let him use the tools he may need, if they have them.

Good luck

Re: HELP..HELP!!!....PLEASE

So is he totally stuck, or can he limp along? If he can limp along and if the Farmington dealership has it, my brother-in-law is in Aztec, just east of Farmington and has a shop and tools. Just let me know if he ends up going there and I'll get a hold Dan and get him going. Farmington is about 2.5 to 3 hours from Taos.

Re: HELP..HELP!!!....PLEASE

He is limping along, but says he is very worried about it. I'm waiting for him to call me so I can get more details as to exactly where he's at. I will keep y'all posted and I will pass this information on to him.

Santa Fe shop has none, and the Albaquerque shop is suppose to call me back, guess we'll see if that happens.

I'm gonna jump on Japako's suggestion and call the local Yamaha shop. Not sure I can get it overnighted in time, but need to talk to husband first to see where he's at. I know for sure they are staying over in Taos, just not sure how far out they are.

I think you have the best plan...I would hate to tear a bike apart in the hotel parking lot Is Eric comfortable doing the work himself?

Re: HELP..HELP!!!....PLEASE

You might need an announcer saying his heat starts in 7 minutes to make him truly comfortable, but I'm confident Eric can do the work himself, in a parking lot if need be.

Sorry, know no one in New Mexico anymore.

Yes, he can do the work himself, just needs the tooling to do so. I know he took some tools, but not sure how much or even if he has the right ones to accomplish this task.

I've talked to a few shops and nobody has a full clutch kit. This is just a thought, but if you buy an after market clutch, like Barnett, you may have a better chance of having one in stock. A California dealer will be open later and you would stand a better chance of overnight shipping.
Just thinking out loud here..
I tried Bike Bandit and that was a no go.

I am in Colorado right now with two bikes, truck, and trailer. We are heading back first thing Sunday towards the DFW area. I might be able to shoehorn a third bike onto the trailer but it would be very tight. I also have my full toolbox with me in the bed of the truck so if he finds the parts and just needs tools we might be able to work something out.

We will be heading down 25 through Raton.

Re: HELP..HELP!!!....PLEASE

Update....

Just got a call from my husband and he has made it to Taos. This is what he said the problem is....

The clutch is slipping only when he has to get on the throttle. It doesn't do it when the bikes not loaded down. For instance, without a passenger or bags full, it does not slip at all. He also said it's worse when it's hot, cooler weather it's not as bad.

He's asking for any suggestions, or ideas from anyone. He said to put his # on here and if anyone has any ideas what the problem could be, to please call him. He's all ears.

817-602-8167

Thanks again everyone.

Re: HELP..HELP!!!....PLEASE

Probably needs clutch fluid, clutch springs or clutch discs. It isn't a hard fix if you have the parts.

I had a similar problem with my WR20R a few years ago. I called an Austin dealer and had the clutch plates sent to TWTEX user Ruidoso Ron's place and swapped it out in about 1 hour.

You put it in gear rev' it and it does not engage at all. It "burned out" trying to be macho in the deep NM clay/mud after a heavy downpour.

Re: HELP..HELP!!!....PLEASE

I don't know nuttin 'bout clutches other than I know you need one. But if worse comes to worse, I have truck, trailer, time and would be willing to go get him Upon delivery home, large quantities of adult beverages would be accepted as payment.

Re: HELP..HELP!!!....PLEASE

Hey guys. This is Eric. Thx for all the support. Here's the scoop. The clutch slips if I blip or gun the throttle to pass a car or accelerate. What is weird is that if I ride the bike without any luggage or any other additional weight. It's fine. If I put a person on the back or luggage it starts to slip. It also does it more if it's hot. I thought it may be the clutch slave cylinder as the bike only had 14k miles. The bike did sit for awhile before I bought it and I did change the oil. I rode it all the to Taos. The cooler it got. The better it got. I did take off the slave cylinder to clean it and the I bled it a bit. I think I actually got some play back in the lever.

So. Here is my dilemma. Do I go on to Colorado or come straight home? I think I am going to try it out first thing in the morning and if it slips. I may just head home. I think I can make it.

Thanks again. Looking forward to your input.

Re: HELP..HELP!!!....PLEASE

eric, did you go to a synthetic by chance I had some slippage with a brand of synthetic once dont remember the brand but have used others with no issues

Also check the slave it may be dragging slightly from build up of gunk, had that issue once as well, Also a flush and fill on the clutch master may do the trick

Where did CycleCat move wasnt it up that way somewhere??

Re: HELP..HELP!!!....PLEASE

Right, auto oils are not good with wet clutches, depending on additives.

It does sound like clutch slippage though, so if the slave is okay then you are right in thinking that new plates are in order.
