Careful; got taken for $85 on this board

Sent $85 via PayPal 7/05 for bags posted on this board to be shipped from Dallas to Houston. Still waiting. Claimed to have shipped USPS on 7/19/12. Initially I offered to pick up on upcoming trip to Dallas but he insisted to ship. Had previous good experience here on TWT but pay when in hand scenerio. Have done Craigslist & ebay over the years with no problems.

I've heard there's no protection with PayPal. I'm betting the guy closed his account. Anybody have any expereince with PayPal dealing with something like this?

Thanks.

If you sent it as a gift, you're screwed. Otherwise, you have 45 days to file a dispute with Paypal. It sounds like you'll need to escalate the dispute to a claim to get handled faster. Once you turn over all the information you have, they'll take care of the rest.

His phone number is in his ad, I assume he won't respond to phone calls either?

This.

I've had to do it twice over the last few years and received my money back both times.

Do not EVER send payment as a gift. That removes any action Paypal will take if the deal goes sideways and you get screwed.

Demand a tracking number first, Post Office is not perfect
If he refuses that my guess is he either has never shipped or has scammed you sad to see on here as I have never had an issue buying or selling on the boards I frequent

On some boards there are sections labeled Page of Fame for good selling members and vendors and Page of Shame for those you may want to avoid

Re: Careful; got taken for $85 on this board

Start a paypal claim if he can't/doesn't provide a tracking number that is valid. Paypal will ask for the same thing. If he cannot provide one to Paypal they will find in your favor and should refund your money.

It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a ‘dismal science.' But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance. – Murray N. Rothbard

For people who would ordinarily consider it a great evil to deprive individuals of their rights or oppress politically powerless minority groups will respond with patriotic fervor when these same actions are described as upholding the rule of law. - John Hasnas

Re: Careful; got taken for $85 on this board

A google search for that number turns up a large number of For Sale listings on different boards (guns, jeeps, here, etc.) It's an AT&T mobile phone (or one of their MVNOs) rated out of McKinney, if that helps (I'm sure not so much.) Other sites show it as being registered to a person in Carrollton. I'm in Grapevine, so if you need boots on the ground, let me know- I'm not fond of fraudsters. You might also reach out to the other posters in his previous sale threads to see if any of them have completed a transaction successfully.

Appears to be handle 86xjbeater on lsjc.org and bci21984 on texasguntalk.com.

You might try both a PM and an email to touch base?

Re: Careful; got taken for $85 on this board

Thanks for input. I see I've been moved off the for sale forum so few will see warning now.

I have the guy's phone number that was in ad. Doesn't answer or respond to text/voice mail. Got a flag shortly after buy when I went to check on item. Said he couldn't get shipping info from PayPal...strange. I've bought alot of stuff through PayPal & never heard that one. I checked & it's clearly noted in PayPal transaction notes.

I give him credit because he posted a second time on TWT that he didn't have my shipping info. Had a hard time getting him to respond to give shipping info.

Opened the PayPal case. I accept the loss. Sad. Most motorcycle folks I've met good people. No more buy & ship on TWT.

Re: Careful; got taken for $85 on this board

Membership on this or any board will not guarantee honesty of buyers or sellers. You get to know some people through multiple postings and eventually personally gain some true friends.
Not knowing details of the seller other than you comment, I cannot provide opinions but certainly enough time has gone by for you to have been contacted with an explanation / resolution.
Hope you can recover the claim with P/Pal and I am also sorry about your bad deal.

Agreed, I don't like to see this characterized as "scammed on this board"; the board really had nothing to do with it. What might help is a tip in the Posting Rules for the FS/Wanted section advising buyers to vet the seller carefully; how many posts does the seller have? How much interaction with other members? How long has be been a member? Consider these aspects before making a transaction.

Re: Careful; got taken for $85 on this board

I got scammed for $25 once using paypal. Now I always use credit card as form of payment for Paypal transactions, if deal goes south I file with Paypal, If Paypal drags their feet or can't get money from seller. I get the credit card company to do a charge back. I get my money back and Paypal gets stuck with the bill until they collect from the fraudster.

Actually, now it's out in the open for lots of folks to see. Your ad wasn't selling anything and the mods were correct in moving it.

I kind of take this as a slap in the face. I've sold a few things on here and I hope that folks were happy with my communication and what was received. To slap down the entire site based on one bad apple is as bad as folks characterizing all motorcyclists as hoodlums.

You've contributed 16 posts on the board, two of which are on here where you've backhanded the amazing people and this fantastic board. A few others had to be in the for sale thread. Stick around, meet some folks. I guarantee the folks here will make you forget this dillhole because this is a great group of people. Heck, as a very recent example, how many boards will put out an open invitation to come crash at a guys house for the weekend and then have two other guys show up and cook all night and day for the random strangers that show up? Nowhere!

Re: Careful; got taken for $85 on this board

We do not do witch hunts here on TWT.

If the buyer/seller have a problem, they need to work it out.

If I am shown sufficient evidence to convince me that there was an intentional act of theft/fraud, I will remove the offending user's account. Such a showing DOES NOT need to be done publicly.
