Forum PayPal scam? -- [NOT on TWT!]

Anyone heard of this......last year I posted an item for sale on an Audi Forum. Sold long ago on CL, and forgot to delete the add. Yesterday I get an email from the forum saying it sold and money is in my PayPal. Look in PayPal. Money is there, a name and an address in NY. Emailed buyer to explain, and no response. No haggling, no PM's, nothing. Seems weird.

Yeah that is weird, I'd let PayPal know.

Re: Forum PayPal scam?

Leave it there and disassociate your bank account immediately before the so-called purchaser files a complaint with Paypal and ties up both accounts.

If its legit, you can send it back.

Re: Forum PayPal scam?

This is why my paypal address only gets sent via PM. I don't/won't put it in the FS thread itself.

I use more than one account. Transfers from paypal go to one account and then are immediately transferred to a second unrelated account. I don't keep a significant balance in the account attached to paypal.

Re: Forum PayPal scam?

Buyer probably has an old email address for PayPal that they don't use everyday so no quick reply. After money is verified and in your "real" PayPal account not some link in the email that you clicked on then only one thing to do. Refund the money and explain that item was already sold.

Re: Forum PayPal scam?

Money is really there. I disassociated my accounts, and will just process the refund minus what PayPal took. Seems odd overall. I don't even know how they got my PayPal address. I never listed that anywhere. Must be something that forum does automatically looking at the email you register with or something. First email was generated by the forum saying item sold, and funds sent to PayPal. Next email was from PayPal stating the same. Weird system I guess.

If you issue a full refund PayPal will not take anything. I missed the part about the forum email. I would contact the forum and ask them. Do they just assume your email address is the same as your PayPal one? Many times it is different.

Re: Forum PayPal scam?

If you issue a refund, they get your refund money, remove funds and disappear. Then the original payment eventually gets bounced by the bank/card issuer or disputed by the legal card holder, the bank comes back after the paypal account, you get caught out, possibly owing it, possibly paypal covering it, but the scammer has your refund money legitimately while never having had the original deposit money legitimately. ***DO NOT*** issue a refund until you know exactly who to, why and have been appropriately authorized to do so with the knowledge and cooperation of paypal.

Re: Forum PayPal scam?

Not so, a refunded payment gets returned to the same card that it was paid with. If there was fraud involved then the return of funds nulifies it as far as you would be concerned. Also that is why I said check with PayPal that funds already verified so he is protected.

Re: Forum PayPal scam?

Thanks for all the responses. I was about to hit the refund button, but think I will sit on this for just a couple days to see what shakes out. Obviously the individual who bought this isn't chomping at the bit or they'd maybe have emailed or PM'd me by now. I really feel like something is amiss, and now just eager to see what it is. On the other hand maybe the buyer is just a really passive individual.

Send an email to spoof@paypal.com explaining the circumstances and asking for help. This is their fraud/scam security group and they will reply and let you know what to do.

Re: Forum PayPal scam?

After some google stalking and actually getting a phone number for the individual, I found that it was indeed legit. Buyer was thankful for my honesty, and he has his money back. No fraud, no harm.

Thanks for all the advice all the same.

That's just about the best resolution that could have come out of that odd situation.

You must be living right or something.
