Oil Change Price

How much is too much to pay for an oil change?

Re: Oil Change Price

What bike? They generally run about $75 these days. 1/2 hour of labor, oil and filter plus fees and taxes.

Re: Oil Change Price

I just realized I don't know the answer to this question. Kurt sounds reasonable to me, though to say $75 for an oil change kills me. I can't remember the last time I didn't change the oil myself. Did one this morning actually.

Re: Oil Change Price

Is motorcycle technician labor running $75 a half hour? That's more than TWICE what auto tech labor is in my area.

Re: Oil Change Price

If NTB did bike oil changes, it would cost $20. Places that have oil lanes charge way below mechanic prices, and make their money on volume. Then again, who do you trust with your 11,000 rpm engine?

I don't know about how other bikes are for oil changes, but my VStrom and my previous Hondas have been stupidly easy. It's not just the money I save. I can change the oil in less time than I can drive to the nearest shop. And while it's draining is a good time to check tire pressures & oil the chain.

Re: Oil Change Price

The reason I asked was I was quoted $170 for a full sythetic oil change on my Harley. It has three places that take oil, tranny, primary and engine, but it still only takes 4.7 quarts. We're living in our RV and I don't have my tools or a garage so I figured I just take it to a dealer and have it changed, but at that price I decided to do it myself.

I ended up having to buy a #27 torx screwdriver and oil drain pan and the oil and filter cost $60. It took me about 30 minutes start to finish to change all three fluids and that was longer than normal because I didn't have my tools or workbench.

I know they have to make money, but they don't pay what I paid for the oil--if their oil doesn't come in a big drum and cost less than half of what I paid, they are screwing up.

Re: Oil Change Price

One of TWT's advertisers, Motorcycles Unlimited in Houston advertises a $50 oil change for most bikes. I think that is a reasonable price. Look for the banner at the top of the page.

.
This is why I change my own oil.
Yeah they were beating you up with the price so you did the right thing by passing, but more importantly you know it was done right and can feel secure in that when riding the bike. I don't trust dealers with even these easy jobs.

From what I have seen, $60-90 per hour is typical, depending on if it is an independent shop or a dealership. And don't forget about flat-rate labor charges at many places.

Re: Oil Change Price

If you are throwing in final drive and gear box, add another $50-$75. I was quoted about $250 for the first service on my Goldwing when I bought it (trying to sell a service package). It was nothing more than an oil change and once-over of all the fluid and safety systems.

Re: Oil Change Price

realy depends of what you are changing oil in.

some bikes (naked) take five minutes and just a couple quarts of oil, some take a hour just to get body work off.

I just did the Burgman spin on mod on my ZRX and that will save me $12-20 each oil change and be much less messy.

There's your problem right there I can remember everyone I knew who had a Harley always joked that HD stood for "hundred dollars" because every time they took it in, it cost at least a hundred dollars to do anything.

I always do my own service, especially on a bike - it's stupid easy, even if you have to remove some plastic. I used to buy kits specific to my bike for around $40 and it came with everything needed to change it (filter, oil, etc.). No way am I paying someone $70 or more to change my oil - have fun wrenching on your bike, it's part of the fun of owning two wheels! Something I'm lacking at the moment unfortuantely
