Testing the waters for a Padre Island ride

IM debating the wisedom of a knarly dualsport ride down the national seashore....is this adventure or just stupidity? I know its 4x4 country but dont know what it would do to a chain and sprocket....
If I can bring along my shark rod and maybe a small icechest im down with trying it...
any thoughts on such an attempt?

Re: Testing the waters for a Padre Island ride

This has already been done and definitely doable. There is a good thread here from a group doing it last year. Not enough time for me to search for it this am.

Don't worry about your chain and sprocket. Most important thing is to wash off the salt spray when ride is over. Your DR650 would be a great bike for this ride with decent 50/50 or better dual sport tires.

I'd be interested in riding it also but my calendar is pretty full already between now and the end of the year.

Re: Testing the waters for a Padre Island ride

I've been down to the 20-mile mark plenty of times in my Jeep. Most of it is easy driving and hard sand. Every mile or so, you hit an area maybe 100-150 yards long, of deep, soft, nasty, slippery sand. I half-drive, half-slide through and have never had a problem. Then again, I'm a chicken and do it with 4 wheels. At the 20 mile mark is Big Shell Beach, a nice place to hang for a while.

I would like to ride this too. Not keen on boating across the fish pass though. The speed limit on the national seashore was 15mph last time I was there. The rides must be street legal. If I were doing the ride I would prefer my ct90 over larger more expensive rides.

Re: Testing the waters for a Padre Island ride

go for it dude! If it wasn't 8 hours away for me I would jump on this trip. We routinely ride the beach around Bolivar Peninsula/ Galveston and its great. I have been to south Padre and I realize the beach and sand is much different there than here, just keep your speed up and you will be fine in the deep sand, then wash off with cold water when done and clean/ lube. From 250 - 650cc no problems!
