Good video format converter?

Howdy,

My canon PS camera does vids in AVI format. Even short vids are HUGE! For instance, a 35 second video is 65 MB! Needless to say, that will take forever to upload on my 1.5Mbps line (which is maybe 764K upload).

So I am wondering if anyone knows of a decent program (FREE) that will covert from AVI to maybe MPG4 or something smaller so I can resize the vids on my computer and then upload them?

I need this for my Cloudcroft trip report.

So if I plan to upload the vids to YouTube, what is the best format to convert them to?

I've had good luck with Format Factory...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FormatFactory

It's adware but the ads only appear in the software when you use it, not in the final video.

Depends on the quality you want really. I've found that .avi (xvid) is a good compromise of quality/file size.

Re: Good video format converter?

Sorta hijacking here, but maybe it'll help others too. I like filming with my GoPro, but saving the movies to my computer takes forever. I'm using Windows Movie Maker to do this. Then, uploading to either YouTube, or Vimeo takes even longer! Any suggestions as to how these processes could be sped up? Is there a way to maybe compress the files somehow, or would this mess up the quality on playback? Thanks.

The initial key is your format selection on the GoPro.

Study the manual that came with it and/or visit the massive ADV site on the GoPro and you'll find info on file format size and others opinions on same.

Full 1080 can choke many platforms when 720 can get almost the same impact across.

The other key variables is your processor speed and your bandwidth.

There are also GoPro format sample videos on YouTube to give you an idea of what you are gaining or not.

I had fun taking 5 three minute videos of the same thing in the various formate and uploading them to get a feel for the workflow.

At the end of the day I bet it'll be your format selection and your computer's speed.

There are also other tip tidbits on the sources mentioned (host site settings being one example).

Again, all depends on what kind of quality you are looking for. If you want full HD then the files will probably be fairly large no matter what. You could use a program like AnyVideoConverter and try a few different formats to see what gets the best size/quality ratio for your needs. As mentioned, avi tends to be a good compromise. I am by no means an expert but use AnyVideoConverter at work to help instructors upload video for online courses.

Re: Good video format converter?

I am not looking for pro results. I have a bunch of 15-60 second vids of guys riding. I am more concerned that people get a feel for the riding than whether or not the quality is HD. So decent quality will do for me. Here is an example of what I just did using the AnyVideoConverter program going from AVI to MPGII:

That went from 64MB to about 4MB. Needless to say the upload to YouTube was MUCH faster!!

I second handbrake. If I recall it was just a bit harder to install than average but it does make a nice m4v file
