Best DFW machine shop for boring a sleeve
Found the cause of my EXCESSIVE oil consumption on the DR, a greatly scored cylinder wall. I've got the jug off and am about to order the factory .5mm overbore kit. I use several machine shops through my auto shop, but is there anyone highly recommended for air cooled thumper expertise?

2: DO NOT ORDER a .5mm oversize piston until your selected shop has looked at the cylinder.. Unless you have a dial bore gauge, including the specialized tips needed to reach into the score in the wall.. you do not know if a .5mm larger bore will actually be large enough. .5mm is not much at all, any decent scar in the cylinder will be deeper then that, and in an older bike like that, Id expect to see more then .5mm in taper or out of round wear in the cylinder.

I hope .5 will do it lol, that's all that's available without having something made to order. Left the cylinder at work, but will post pictures Monday.

There are other options if that truly is the ONLY oversize piston for the bike. Deep gouges can be welded or liners can be installed or gouges welded, bored, nikasil plated, honed . This is another reason to choose a better shop that has more options then just a local one that owns a machine capable of boring small cylinders. My recommendation is, pack the cylinder in a box and send it to Millenium Technologies http://www.mt-llc.com/ Allow them to help you choose a viable option...

Re: Best DFW machine shop for boring a sleeve
I use a guy in Alvin TX called RAT Racing. He can even re-surface (electroplate) the bore. He is very professional. Ask for Tom (he bored and surfaced my 02 RM 250 last year)
I know its not DFW but with UPS and FEDEX this might be an option. (409) 925-0812 |

Darcy Racing off 121. He can probably bore but not sure about replating.

Re: Best DFW machine shop for boring a sleeve
a 91 DR650 is a steel liner, no Nikasil or other plating far as I know. Though it would be better plan then just a new steel liner.
If the cylinder will not bore and hone to size whiten limits for a .5mm over bore (and likely not, .5mm just not much, and about what a lightly worn bore, NO damage would need.) If your not using a local place, I cant recommend Millenium Technologies highly enough. Turn around is normally just a few days, prices are very reasonably and work quality is above reproach .

Re: Best DFW machine shop for boring a sleeve
Wiseco makes standard, 1mm over and 2mm over forged pistons for that engine!!
a good shop will need the new piston and match the bore to the new piston.

Re: Best DFW machine shop for boring a sleeve
For $77 this might not be a bad option. Bore looks pretty good but photos don't always show everything. Beyond me why someone would take a good running engine apart to part it out. I would think more value in a complete running engine.

Re: Best DFW machine shop for boring a sleeve
I found the Wiseco 1mm overbore kit, but their 2mm is a non stocked item that requires a minimum of 4 lol. Any other DR guys up for a 670 kit?

Sweet! You will need to re-jet the carb to compensate for the increased compression. Will be interesting to see how much power you gain.

Re: Best DFW machine shop for boring a sleeve
It is standard compression (low) and displacement is just under 660. I think any difference will be negligible.
