Lubbock Extreme SaddleSore

Anyone know if Bill is a member here? This is a hardcore ride...

I could see a couple of possibilities in Houston... 610 Loop or the Tollway. But if you think sitting there, twisting that for a 1000 miles is grueling, I can't imagine what it's like to do the loops.

Re: Lubbock Extreme SaddleSore

I live in Lubbock. I don't know the answer to "why" but that takes some serious mental toughness. I'd of crashed from boredom after one lap. I can't imagine 40 laps.

This one made me laugh a little. I envisioned spending all day riding on loop 820 here in Fort Worth. I'd lose my mind after a few laps.

Sure, but the nothingness surrounding Lubbock make for perfect Saddlesore routes.

it would only take 21 laps of 820 to get 1031 miles.
if you started at I-35w on the southside and went east and kept going out I-20 and looped up around Dallas on 635 and took 121 from the end of 635 to 183 then back on 820 and over and around the west side of Fort Worth, you would only have to put in 8 laps to get a total of 1016 miles.

more fun would be to start in Kerrville and head south on 16 to Medina and turn right on 337 and follow it to Camp Wood and hang a right and go up and jump on 335 and take it to 41 and hang anothe right and follow 41 to 336 and hang a right and take it to the intersection with 83 in Leakey and turn left and go north on 83 till you reach 39 and turn right and take 39 till it joins up with 27 and takes you back into Kerrville and to the starting point again.

220 miles so 5 laps would be 1100 miles.

Re: Lubbock Extreme SaddleSore

I've met Bill. He came down to Houston to pick up some parts from me.
He and that 500LTD are legendary.

Congrats Bill!

As for Houston, BW8 is about 90 miles all the way around. Only 12 laps to crank out a 1K.

Multiple laps of a loop don't count. Must be one way, there and back, or one giant loop.

The certificate at the beginning of this thread proves that you are wrong.

The criteria for being awarded a loop certificate differ from those of a normal SS1K, but if you satisfy that criteria you will be awarded the cert, as Bill was.

The biggest factor is having witnesses at your corners for the duration of your ride to attest that you did in fact ride the loop and did not cut corners.

Actually, it's more difficult due to the logistics. If you are interested in riding your first SS1K there is a Memorial Ride at the end of this month in which we are trying to bring new riders into the fold. http://www.nmpcs.com/2012memorialride/

That's pretty much what the motorcycle cop in Washington DC said when he watched John Ryan do the DC SS1K. The cop pulled him over to have a discussion.

"I rode the Three Sisters 11 times each in 24 hours!".

A three sisters loop starting/ending in Leakey and running north on 336, west on 41, south on 335, and east on 335 is 95.5 miles so you'd need to do 11 circuits. The downside is that each loop is projected to take 2.5 hours which is a total of 27.5 hours and that does not include fuel / pee / eat breaks which typically adds another hour (minimum) even if you're quick.

Now you're at 28.5 hours which is a 35 mph avg overall speed. You need a 42 mph avg overall speed to do 1000 miles in 23.5 hours so you would need to pick up an additional 7 mph to do this. It certainly could be done, but you'd need to do it mid-week to avoid the "tourist" bikers on the weekend, and you'd really need to watch for deer after sundown.

Unless you were able to obtain a receipt at each of the four corners you'd have to have witnesses there throughout your entire ride to prove that you rode the circuit.

I'm pretty sure this ride has not been done so you'd be the point man on a new certified ride.

Re: Lubbock Extreme SaddleSore

Would be MUCH more fun to go from Beaumont to ElPaso and then back again on I10. Crazy to watch the scenery change! But, that would be a TAD over 1k miles.

Beaumont to El Paso and back would be closer to 2K miles. Scenery? what scenery, that stretch of road puts me to sleep.

The best possible SS1K loop route would be riding the Nuremberg Loop. Now that would be fun!! And with their non existing speed limit a BB1.5K might even be fun also.

The ride west of San Antonio to El Paso is boooooooring (BTDT for one of my SS1Kk's) so I would suggest:
Beaumont
I-10 to Luling (BBQ for lunch)
North to Austin/35 to DFW
East on 20 to Shreveport
South on 49 to Layfayette
West on 10 back to Beaumont

That would put you right at 1K miles and the scenery would be MUCH better.

True. But he already has a fistful of regular SS1K certs. This one is different/harder/more challenging.

Just like the mountain climber that has been up Mt Shasta a dozen times... should he do it again, or should he push himself to do a more challenging mountain?

Many people have done a Border to Border. Less have done a B2B Insanity (less than 24 hours). It's all about what drives you.

Some folks are content to have the same bike for ten years. Some can't go a year without changing rides.
